Why kitchen worktop fitting for a Hampshire home?

Solid wood that has blackened around the sink and tap is a common reason people in Hampshire ask about replacing their worktops with something new.

If you have bought a kitchen online for your Hampshire home, you may need a fitter to cut and joint the laminate or wood worktops properly on site.

What does kitchen worktop fitting in Hampshire include?

Kitchens in homes across Hampshire

The housing mix across Hampshire includes Victorian terraces, 1930s semis, post-war estate houses and thatched and brick cottages, so no two kitchen fits are quite alike. Terraces in Southampton and Portsmouth often have a narrow back kitchen, while post-war estate houses tend to have a compact rectangular room suited to an L-shape.

Water across Hampshire is mostly hard, largely from chalk sources, so limescale on taps and boiling water taps is common and a filter can help. Dense terraced streets can be very tight for parking, and New Forest lanes and village roads may limit the size of delivery vehicle.

Terraced houses often have a small back kitchen behind the dining room, and owners frequently knock through to make one family space. Village cottages bring thick walls, low beams and sometimes a range cooker, all of which shape the layout.

Rules for kitchen worktop fitting in Hampshire

New worktops need no planning permission or Building Regulations approval in England. Disconnecting and reconnecting a gas hob must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and an electric hob or oven goes back on its existing circuit. Moving or adding sockets above the worktop on an existing kitchen circuit is not notifiable, but it must meet BS 7671. In a listed building, check before removing any original fitted joinery.

Homes within the New Forest or South Downs national parks, listed cottages and conservation areas may need consent for a new extractor vent or alterations to historic features.

Before you start

  • Use trivets for hot pans on every type of worktop; sudden heat can scorch laminate and wood and mark or crack some stone.
  • Plan the joints: keep laminate joints away from the sink where possible, while stone joints are positioned by the fabricator to suit the slabs.
  • Quartz and granite are heavy; the units must be sound, level and well fixed, and any swollen or weak carcasses replaced first.
  • Solid wood needs regular re-oiling and should not be left with standing water around the sink, tap or kettle.
  • Clear the worktops and the cupboards beneath them before fitting day, as the old tops and the sink need space to come out.
  • Before templating day at your Hampshire home, make sure the sink, tap and hob are on site so the stone can be cut to them.

Questions about kitchen worktop fitting in Hampshire

How much does kitchen worktop fitting cost in Hampshire?

Guide prices in Hampshire are about £580 to £1,400 including VAT for laminate worktops, supplied and fitted. The final price depends on the size of the kitchen and what is moving, and is set out in an itemised written quote.

Do you cover the whole of Hampshire?

How are laminate worktops joined at corners?

With either a mason's mitre or a joint strip. A mason's mitre is routed with a jig so the front edge profile turns the corner, then glued, sealed and pulled tight with connector bolts underneath. A joint strip is a metal or colour-matched profile fixed and sealed between the two lengths. Either way, every cut edge, including the sink and hob cut-outs, is sealed so water cannot swell the core.

How long does it take to fit new worktops?

Usually a day for laminate or solid wood in a typical kitchen, cut and jointed on site. Stone takes two visits: the fabricator templates once the base units are fixed and level, then cuts the worktops, the sink and hob openings and any drainer grooves, and fits them about one to two weeks later. In the meantime the sink is usually out of use, so plan meals around that gap.

Can I put hot pans on a quartz worktop?

It is safer not to. Quartz contains resin that can discolour or crack under sudden heat, so pans straight from the hob or oven should go on a trivet or pan stand. Granite copes better with heat but can still be marked or cracked by intense heat in one spot, and laminate and wood scorch easily. A trivet kept next to the hob protects any worktop.
