Is kitchen worktop fitting right for your Surrey kitchen?

When a Surrey kitchen is about to be sold or let, new worktops and upstands can make the room look cared for without replacing any of the units.

If your Surrey kitchen still has a dated tiled or laminate surface, new worktops often go in with a new sink, tap and splashback at the same time.

What does kitchen worktop fitting in Surrey include?

Your written quote lists everything included. For kitchen worktop fitting, that normally means:

  • Free survey visit to measure the runs and check the base units are level
  • Old worktops removed and taken away, with the sink and hob disconnected safely
  • Laminate jointed with a mason's mitre or joint strips, and every cut edge sealed
  • Solid wood oiled before and after fitting and fixed to allow seasonal movement
  • Quartz, granite or sintered stone templated once the base units are fixed and level
  • Undermount sink and hob cut-outs cut and finished by the stone fabricator
  • Sink, tap and hob reconnected, with gas hobs connected by Gas Safe registered engineers
  • Matching upstands fitted and the joint to the wall sealed

Kitchens in homes across Surrey

The housing mix across Surrey includes 1930s semis, Victorian and Edwardian villas, detached family houses and new-build estates, so no two kitchen fits are quite alike. 1930s semis often have a narrow kitchen beside the dining room, while larger detached houses and Edwardian villas may have room for an island or a separate utility.

Surrey's water is hard across most of the county, so limescale on taps and boiling water taps is common, and a scale-reducing filter is worth considering. Private roads, long drives and village lanes can be awkward for large lorries, while town-centre flats may need lift bookings and parking permits for delivery day.

Joining the kitchen and dining room in a 1930s semi, often with a peninsula and seating, is a common project. Larger detached houses tend to suit a supply-and-fit kitchen with an island, a boiling water tap, a separate utility and lighting planned in zones.

Rules for kitchen worktop fitting in Surrey

New worktops need no planning permission or Building Regulations approval in England. Disconnecting and reconnecting a gas hob must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and an electric hob or oven goes back on its existing circuit. Moving or adding sockets above the worktop on an existing kitchen circuit is not notifiable, but it must meet BS 7671. In a listed building, check before removing any original fitted joinery.

Listed buildings and conservation areas in older towns and villages may need consent for new vents, and flats in managed blocks usually need the freeholder's consent first.

Before you start

  • Plan the joints: keep laminate joints away from the sink where possible, while stone joints are positioned by the fabricator to suit the slabs.
  • Stone worktops are templated only once the base units are fixed and level, so allow one to two weeks between fitting and finishing.
  • Solid wood needs regular re-oiling and should not be left with standing water around the sink, tap or kettle.
  • Have the sink, tap and hob on site for templating, so the fabricator can cut the stone to the exact items you have bought.
  • If your Surrey home has uneven walls, ask how the worktop will be scribed so the back edge meets the wall without wide gaps.
  • Check that full-length worktops can get into your Surrey home; long lengths need a clear, straight route through the front door and hall.

Questions about kitchen worktop fitting in Surrey

How much does kitchen worktop fitting cost in Surrey?

Guide prices in Surrey are about £580 to £1,400 including VAT for laminate worktops, supplied and fitted. The final price depends on the size of the kitchen and what is moving, and is set out in an itemised written quote.

Do you cover the whole of Surrey?

Yes. We carry out kitchen worktop fitting across Surrey, including Woking, Guildford, Esher and Redhill. Every job starts with a free survey visit and an itemised written quote.

Will you fit stone worktops I have ordered myself?

Yes, alongside your stone supplier. Stone must be templated and fabricated by the supplier once the base units are fixed and level, so our part is getting the units ready, checking they are sound and reconnecting the sink, tap and hob after the stone is in. Laminate and wood worktops you have bought can be cut, jointed and fitted on site in the usual way.

How do I look after a solid wood worktop?

Oil it regularly and keep it away from standing water. Wood is oiled on every face before fitting and given further coats once in place, then re-oiled more often in the first months. Wipe up round the sink and tap, and do not leave wet cloths or a dripping kettle on it. It is fixed with slotted brackets so it can expand and shrink with the seasons without cracking.

How are laminate worktops joined at corners?

With either a mason's mitre or a joint strip. A mason's mitre is routed with a jig so the front edge profile turns the corner, then glued, sealed and pulled tight with connector bolts underneath. A joint strip is a metal or colour-matched profile fixed and sealed between the two lengths. Either way, every cut edge, including the sink and hob cut-outs, is sealed so water cannot swell the core.
