Why kitchen worktop fitting for a Battersea home?

Many people in Greater London choose quartz or granite when they upgrade, and need the base units fixed and level before the fabricator can come to template.

Some homeowners across Greater London have already ordered stone worktops from a supplier and need someone to fix and level the base units so templating can go ahead. Battersea sits about 2 miles south-west of Westminster, and our Greater London coverage takes in everything in between.

What does the job involve?

Here is what usually goes into kitchen worktop fitting, adjusted to your Battersea kitchen after we have measured it:

  • Quartz, granite or sintered stone templated once the base units are fixed and level
  • Undermount sink and hob cut-outs cut and finished by the stone fabricator
  • Matching upstands fitted and the joint to the wall sealed
  • Free survey visit to measure the runs and check the base units are level
  • Sink, tap and hob reconnected, with gas hobs connected by Gas Safe registered engineers
  • Old worktops removed and taken away, with the sink and hob disconnected safely

Kitchens in homes around Battersea

You will find Victorian and Edwardian terraces, conversion flats, mansion block flats and 1930s semis throughout Greater London. Victorian terraces often have a narrow galley beside the side return, while conversion flats and mansion blocks usually fit the kitchen into a small room or along one living-room wall.

Permit parking, red routes and flats without lifts are common, so parking suspensions, stair carries and lift bookings may need arranging before delivery day. London's mains water is hard, so limescale builds quickly on taps and boiling water taps, and a scale-reducing filter is worth planning in.

Do you need approval for kitchen worktop fitting in Battersea?

New worktops need no planning permission or Building Regulations approval in England. Disconnecting and reconnecting a gas hob must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and an electric hob or oven goes back on its existing circuit. Moving or adding sockets above the worktop on an existing kitchen circuit is not notifiable, but it must meet BS 7671. In a listed building, check before removing any original fitted joinery.

Conservation areas are widespread across London, so a new extractor vent on a front wall may need permission, and leaseholders usually need the freeholder's written consent first.

Getting the most from your kitchen worktop fitting

  • For a Battersea kitchen with stone worktops, ask whether the upstands will be cut from the same slab so the colour and pattern match.
  • If your Battersea kitchen has a gas hob, a Gas Safe registered engineer needs to disconnect it before the old worktops come off.
  • If your Greater London home has uneven walls, ask how the worktop will be scribed so the back edge meets the wall without wide gaps.
  • Solid wood needs regular re-oiling and should not be left with standing water around the sink, tap or kettle.

Questions about kitchen worktop fitting in Battersea

How much does kitchen worktop fitting cost in Battersea?

Kitchen worktop fitting in Battersea typically costs £650 to £1,600 including VAT for laminate worktops, supplied and fitted, based on prices in London. Larger or more involved jobs cost more, and your price is fixed in writing after a free survey visit.

Which parts of Battersea do you work in?

All of them. Our Greater London coverage takes in the whole of Battersea, including the SW11 postcode district, as well as surrounding towns such as Chelsea. If you are unsure, send us your postcode.

Can I put hot pans on a quartz worktop?

It is safer not to. Quartz contains resin that can discolour or crack under sudden heat, so pans straight from the hob or oven should go on a trivet or pan stand. Granite copes better with heat but can still be marked or cracked by intense heat in one spot, and laminate and wood scorch easily. A trivet kept next to the hob protects any worktop.

Will you fit stone worktops I have ordered myself?

Yes, alongside your stone supplier. Stone must be templated and fabricated by the supplier once the base units are fixed and level, so our part is getting the units ready, checking they are sound and reconnecting the sink, tap and hob after the stone is in. Laminate and wood worktops you have bought can be cut, jointed and fitted on site in the usual way.

How are laminate worktops joined at corners?

With either a mason's mitre or a joint strip. A mason's mitre is routed with a jig so the front edge profile turns the corner, then glued, sealed and pulled tight with connector bolts underneath. A joint strip is a metal or colour-matched profile fixed and sealed between the two lengths. Either way, every cut edge, including the sink and hob cut-outs, is sealed so water cannot swell the core.
