Thinking about hob and oven installation in Plymouth?

If the oven in your Plymouth kitchen has failed, a like-for-like built-in replacement is usually a short job, provided the new model fits the existing housing.

Families in Plymouth adding a double oven may find the existing circuit is not rated for it, so planning the electrics early avoids a delay on fitting day. If your home is in Plymouth or close by in Plymstock or Saltash, the same survey, quote and fitting process applies.

What is in a typical job?

Every kitchen is different, so we confirm the scope in writing. Most jobs of this kind include:

  • Induction and ceramic hobs wired to a suitable cooker circuit and tested
  • Gas hobs and cookers connected and tightness tested by a Gas Safe registered engineer
  • Range cookers levelled, with a stability bracket fitted to gas and dual-fuel models
  • Old hob or oven disconnected safely and taken away for recycling
  • Laminate and wood worktop cut-outs made to the hob template; stone cut-outs by the fabricator
  • Appliance models checked against worktop cut-outs, oven housings and existing supplies

Local homes and their kitchens

The housing mix across Devon includes cob and thatched cottages, Victorian terraces, post-war houses and flats and seaside bungalows, so no two kitchen fits are quite alike. Victorian terraces in Exeter and Torbay often have a narrow back kitchen, while post-war houses and seaside bungalows usually have a square room that suits an L-shape.

Single-track lanes, steep town streets and cottages with no parking can make deliveries slow, so long worktops and tall units need a planned route into the house. Much of Devon has soft mains water, which is kind to taps and appliances, though some eastern parts are harder, so check with your supplier.

Building regulations, electrics and gas in Plymouth

In England, only a Gas Safe registered engineer may fit, connect or move a gas hob, cooker or gas pipework, and the installation is tightness tested afterwards. An induction hob often needs a dedicated cooker circuit; a new circuit is notifiable under Part P, so it is certified through a competent person scheme or building control. Connecting to an existing suitable circuit is not notifiable, but it must still meet BS 7671.

Homes within Dartmoor or Exmoor national parks, listed thatched cottages and conservation areas may need consent before a new extractor vent goes through an outside wall.

Planning ahead

  • Confirm whether your new oven sits under the worktop or in a tall housing, because the ventilation and fixing requirements differ between the two.
  • Measure the gap for a range cooker at worktop height and at floor level, as older walls and thick skirting can narrow the space more than expected.
  • If you are replacing an old cooker with a separate hob and oven in your Plymouth kitchen, ask for the gas supply position and condition to be checked first.
  • Check the induction hob's power rating against your existing cooker circuit, as induction hobs often need a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit.

Questions about hob and oven installation in Plymouth

How much does hob and oven installation cost in Plymouth?

Guide prices in Plymouth are about £120 to £310 including VAT for connecting a gas hob to an existing supply. The final price depends on the size of the kitchen and what is moving, and is set out in an itemised written quote.

Do you work near Plymouth as well?

Yes. As well as Plymouth itself, we cover the rest of Devon and nearby towns such as Plymstock and Saltash. The process is the same wherever the kitchen is.

Do built-in ovens need ventilation?

Yes. Built-in ovens release heat, and their installation instructions set the gaps and openings the housing must leave, often at the back or beneath the oven. Blocking them can overheat the surrounding units and the oven's own controls. An oven under the worktop and one in a tall housing have different requirements, so we check the instructions for your model before fitting.

Who is allowed to connect a gas hob?

By law, anyone who carries out gas work for payment must be on the Gas Safe Register, in Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and anyone working on gas must be competent to do it. We only use Gas Safe registered engineers, and we strongly advise against fitting a gas hob yourself. The engineer connects the hob, tests the installation for tightness, checks the burners and the room's ventilation, and leaves the appliance safe to use. You can ask to see the engineer's Gas Safe ID card before work starts.

Does an induction hob need a new circuit?

Often, yes. Many induction hobs draw more current than an ordinary socket circuit can supply, so they are wired to a dedicated cooker circuit from the consumer unit. If you already have a cooker circuit of the right rating, the hob can usually connect to it. A new circuit is notifiable in England and Wales, and everywhere it must be tested and certified to BS 7671.
