Thinking about hob and oven installation in Oxford?

If your Oxford kitchen has an old ceramic hob with a cracked top, an induction replacement may fit the same cut-out, though the circuit still needs checking.

Some people in Oxford buy a hob and oven online and need them fitted properly, with gas work by a Gas Safe registered engineer and electrics tested and certified. We work throughout Oxford (OX1) and across the wider Oxfordshire area.

What is in a typical job?

Every kitchen is different, so we confirm the scope in writing. Most jobs of this kind include:

  • Gas hobs and cookers connected and tightness tested by a Gas Safe registered engineer
  • Appliance models checked against worktop cut-outs, oven housings and existing supplies
  • Range cookers levelled, with a stability bracket fitted to gas and dual-fuel models
  • Old hob or oven disconnected safely and taken away for recycling
  • Induction and ceramic hobs wired to a suitable cooker circuit and tested
  • Built-in single and double ovens fixed into housings with their ventilation gaps

House types around Oxford and what they mean for a kitchen

Typical homes in this part of Oxfordshire include cotswold stone cottages, Victorian terraces, 1930s semis and new-build estates. Oxford's Victorian terraces often have a narrow galley in the back addition, while stone cottages in market towns and villages tend to have small, low-ceilinged kitchens.

Water across Oxfordshire is hard, so limescale on taps, kettles and boiling water taps is common, and a filter is worth planning in. City streets with permit parking and narrow village lanes can both slow deliveries, so parking and the carry route for worktops are checked at the survey.

Do you need approval for hob and oven installation in Oxford?

In England, only a Gas Safe registered engineer may fit, connect or move a gas hob, cooker or gas pipework, and the installation is tightness tested afterwards. An induction hob often needs a dedicated cooker circuit; a new circuit is notifiable under Part P, so it is certified through a competent person scheme or building control. Connecting to an existing suitable circuit is not notifiable, but it must still meet BS 7671.

Oxford's many listed buildings and conservation areas, along with Cotswold stone villages, may need consent before a new vent is cut or historic features are removed.

Practical advice for Oxford homeowners

  • Before buying an induction hob for your Oxford home, check the rating of the cooker circuit at the consumer unit, or ask for it to be checked at the survey.
  • Ask the Gas Safe engineer for a record of the work and keep it with your home documents, especially if you let a property in Oxfordshire.
  • If you are replacing an old cooker with a separate hob and oven in your Oxford kitchen, ask for the gas supply position and condition to be checked first.
  • A range cooker needs a level, firm floor and, for gas and dual-fuel models, a stability bracket so it cannot tip when the door is loaded.

Questions about hob and oven installation in Oxford

How much does hob and oven installation cost in Oxford?

Hob and oven installation in Oxford typically costs £140 to £340 including VAT for connecting a gas hob to an existing supply, based on prices in the South East. Larger or more involved jobs cost more, and your price is fixed in writing after a free survey visit.

Who is allowed to connect a gas hob?

By law, anyone who carries out gas work for payment must be on the Gas Safe Register, in Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and anyone working on gas must be competent to do it. We only use Gas Safe registered engineers, and we strongly advise against fitting a gas hob yourself. The engineer connects the hob, tests the installation for tightness, checks the burners and the room's ventilation, and leaves the appliance safe to use. You can ask to see the engineer's Gas Safe ID card before work starts.

Does an induction hob need a new circuit?

Often, yes. Many induction hobs draw more current than an ordinary socket circuit can supply, so they are wired to a dedicated cooker circuit from the consumer unit. If you already have a cooker circuit of the right rating, the hob can usually connect to it. A new circuit is notifiable in England and Wales, and everywhere it must be tested and certified to BS 7671.

Why does a range cooker need a stability bracket?

Because a range cooker can tip forward if weight is put on an open oven door, which could damage the gas connection or injure someone. Gas and dual-fuel models are secured with a stability bracket or chain to the wall or floor behind, as the manufacturer specifies, and the cooker is levelled on a firm floor so its doors close properly and pans sit flat.
