Who usually needs replacement kitchen doors in Oxford?

If your Oxfordshire kitchen is older, its cabinets may be in sizes that are no longer standard, so made-to-measure doors let you keep units that are still sound.

If you have bought an Oxford home where the kitchen layout works but the colour does not, new doors and handles can change the look in a day or two. We cover all of Oxford, including the OX1 postcode district, and travel out to neighbouring towns across Oxfordshire.

What does the job involve?

Here is what usually goes into replacement kitchen doors, adjusted to your Oxford kitchen after we have measured it:

  • Handles or knobs drilled from a template so they sit at a consistent height
  • New fronts fixed to integrated appliances with their door-fixing kits
  • Matching end panels, plinths, cornice and pelmet cut and fitted
  • Doors and drawer fronts made to measure or matched to the existing sizes
  • Drawer fronts fixed to existing drawer boxes, or new boxes where worn
  • New soft-close hinges fitted and every door adjusted so the gaps run even

Kitchens in homes around Oxford

Across Oxfordshire you will often find cotswold stone cottages, Victorian terraces, 1930s semis and new-build estates, and each shapes the kitchen differently. Oxford's Victorian terraces often have a narrow galley in the back addition, while stone cottages in market towns and villages tend to have small, low-ceilinged kitchens.

Water across Oxfordshire is hard, so limescale on taps, kettles and boiling water taps is common, and a filter is worth planning in. City streets with permit parking and narrow village lanes can both slow deliveries, so parking and the carry route for worktops are checked at the survey.

Building regulations, electrics and gas in Oxford

Replacing kitchen doors needs no planning permission or Building Regulations approval in England, because nothing structural, electrical or plumbed changes. The exception is a listed building, where original fitted cupboards or joinery may need listed building consent before they are altered. If you add plinth or cornice lighting at the same time, the wiring must meet BS 7671, and a new circuit for it would be notifiable under Part P.

Oxford's many listed buildings and conservation areas, along with Cotswold stone villages, may need consent before a new vent is cut or historic features are removed.

Practical advice for Oxford homeowners

  • Open the sink cupboard in your Oxford kitchen and press the base; soft or swollen board means that unit needs replacing before new doors.
  • Count every door, drawer front, end panel and plinth before asking for prices, including integrated appliance doors and panels at the ends of runs.
  • If the hob or sink in your Oxfordshire kitchen needs to move, plan a fuller refit rather than new doors on a layout that does not work.
  • Door sizes and hinge positions vary between makers, so doors must be made to measure or matched carefully to your existing units.

Questions about replacement kitchen doors in Oxford

How much do replacement kitchen doors cost in Oxford?

Guide prices in Oxford are about £1,200 to £3,400 including VAT for 15 to 20 doors and drawer fronts, supplied and fitted. The final price depends on the size of the kitchen and what is moving, and is set out in an itemised written quote.

Which parts of Oxford do you work in?

All of them. Our Oxfordshire coverage takes in the whole of Oxford, including the OX1 postcode district, as well as surrounding towns such as Abingdon. If you are unsure, send us your postcode.

Can I change to a completely different door style?

Usually, yes. Slab, shaker and painted doors can all go on standard carcasses if the sizes and hinge positions suit. An in-frame look is more involved, because the doors sit inside a frame built onto the front of the units, so it costs more. A true handleless kitchen uses rails built into the carcasses, so with a door change that look is imitated with edge-profiled doors instead.

When does a new kitchen make more sense than new doors?

When the problem is more than the look. If several carcasses are swollen or broken, the layout does not work for you, or you want to move the sink, hob or appliances, new doors only cover the issue. New doors suit kitchens whose cabinets are square, dry and well fixed and whose layout still works. We will tell you at the survey which route we think makes sense.

What if some of my kitchen units are water damaged?

Damaged units are replaced before the new doors go on, because swollen chipboard does not recover. The sink base is the usual problem, from slow leaks at the trap or tap, followed by units beside the dishwasher. We check every carcass at the survey, look for the cause of any leak, and price replacement units as a separate line so you can see the cost clearly.
