Why do people in Weymouth choose kitchen worktop fitting?

Many people in Dorset choose quartz or granite when they upgrade, and need the base units fixed and level before the fabricator can come to template.

Homeowners in Weymouth with sound units but worn, chipped or swollen laminate often replace just the worktops, keeping the rest of the kitchen as it is. Our Dorset coverage reaches every part of Weymouth (DT3 and DT4) and out towards Dorchester.

What does the job involve?

After the survey visit we write the scope down. For kitchen worktop fitting in Weymouth it usually covers:

  • Free survey visit to measure the runs and check the base units are level
  • Old worktops removed and taken away, with the sink and hob disconnected safely
  • Undermount sink and hob cut-outs cut and finished by the stone fabricator
  • Solid wood oiled before and after fitting and fixed to allow seasonal movement
  • Matching upstands fitted and the joint to the wall sealed
  • Laminate jointed with a mason's mitre or joint strips, and every cut edge sealed

Fitting kitchens in older and newer Weymouth homes

Across Dorset you will often find thatched cottages, Victorian and Edwardian villas, 1930s semis and seaside bungalows, and each shapes the kitchen differently. Edwardian villas in Bournemouth often have a separate kitchen and scullery, while 1930s semis and bungalows tend to have a compact room at the back.

Most of Dorset has hard water, so limescale on taps, sinks and boiling water taps is common, and a scale-reducing filter can help. Flats in converted villas may have no lift and shared hallways, and narrow village lanes can make delivering long worktops difficult.

Regulations for kitchen work in Weymouth

New worktops need no planning permission or Building Regulations approval in England. Disconnecting and reconnecting a gas hob must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and an electric hob or oven goes back on its existing circuit. Moving or adding sockets above the worktop on an existing kitchen circuit is not notifiable, but it must meet BS 7671. In a listed building, check before removing any original fitted joinery.

Thatched and listed cottages may need listed building consent for internal changes, and owners of flats in converted houses usually need the freeholder's consent before work starts.

Tips before you start

  • Before templating day at your Weymouth home, make sure the sink, tap and hob are on site so the stone can be cut to them.
  • If your Weymouth kitchen has a gas hob, a Gas Safe registered engineer needs to disconnect it before the old worktops come off.
  • Check that full-length worktops can get into your Weymouth home; long lengths need a clear, straight route through the front door and hall.
  • Quartz and granite are heavy; the units must be sound, level and well fixed, and any swollen or weak carcasses replaced first.

Questions about kitchen worktop fitting in Weymouth

How much does kitchen worktop fitting cost in Weymouth?

Guide prices in Weymouth are about £520 to £1,200 including VAT for laminate worktops, supplied and fitted. The final price depends on the size of the kitchen and what is moving, and is set out in an itemised written quote.

Do you work near Weymouth as well?

Yes. As well as Weymouth itself, we cover the rest of Dorset and nearby towns such as Dorchester and Bridport. The process is the same wherever the kitchen is.

Can I put hot pans on a quartz worktop?

It is safer not to. Quartz contains resin that can discolour or crack under sudden heat, so pans straight from the hob or oven should go on a trivet or pan stand. Granite copes better with heat but can still be marked or cracked by intense heat in one spot, and laminate and wood scorch easily. A trivet kept next to the hob protects any worktop.

Will you fit stone worktops I have ordered myself?

Yes, alongside your stone supplier. Stone must be templated and fabricated by the supplier once the base units are fixed and level, so our part is getting the units ready, checking they are sound and reconnecting the sink, tap and hob after the stone is in. Laminate and wood worktops you have bought can be cut, jointed and fitted on site in the usual way.

How are laminate worktops joined at corners?

With either a mason's mitre or a joint strip. A mason's mitre is routed with a jig so the front edge profile turns the corner, then glued, sealed and pulled tight with connector bolts underneath. A joint strip is a metal or colour-matched profile fixed and sealed between the two lengths. Either way, every cut edge, including the sink and hob cut-outs, is sealed so water cannot swell the core.
