Kitchen worktop fitting in Washington
Kitchen worktop fitting for Washington homes: laminate, solid wood, quartz and granite worktops fitted or templated, with joints, cut-outs and upstands. Every job starts with a free survey visit and a written quote.

Why kitchen worktop fitting for a Washington home?
If your Tyne and Wear kitchen still has a dated tiled or laminate surface, new worktops often go in with a new sink, tap and splashback at the same time.
Some homeowners across Tyne and Wear have already ordered stone worktops from a supplier and need someone to fix and level the base units so templating can go ahead. Kitchens in every part of Washington are covered, and the survey visit is free wherever you are in Tyne and Wear.
What is included in the work?
After the survey visit we write the scope down. For kitchen worktop fitting in Washington it usually covers:
- Undermount sink and hob cut-outs cut and finished by the stone fabricator
- Free survey visit to measure the runs and check the base units are level
- Sink, tap and hob reconnected, with gas hobs connected by Gas Safe registered engineers
- Laminate jointed with a mason's mitre or joint strips, and every cut edge sealed
- Quartz, granite or sintered stone templated once the base units are fixed and level
- Matching upstands fitted and the joint to the wall sealed

Fitting kitchens in older and newer Washington homes
Typical homes in this part of Tyne and Wear include tyneside flats, Victorian terraces, 1930s semis and post-war council-built houses. Tyneside flats often have a narrow kitchen in the rear offshoot, while 1930s semis and ex-council houses tend to have a small square kitchen at the back.
Back lanes behind terraced streets can help deliveries, but upper Tyneside flats have their own internal stair, so long worktops need careful handling. Hardness varies across Tyne and Wear, from fairly soft around Newcastle to harder in parts of Sunderland, so check with your supplier before choosing a filter.
Do you need approval for kitchen worktop fitting in Washington?
New worktops need no planning permission or Building Regulations approval in England. Disconnecting and reconnecting a gas hob must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and an electric hob or oven goes back on its existing circuit. Moving or adding sockets above the worktop on an existing kitchen circuit is not notifiable, but it must meet BS 7671. In a listed building, check before removing any original fitted joinery.
In conservation areas and listed buildings, such as parts of central Newcastle and Tynemouth, a new external vent or changes to historic features may need consent.
Getting the most from your kitchen worktop fitting
- If your Washington kitchen has a gas hob, a Gas Safe registered engineer needs to disconnect it before the old worktops come off.
- Plan the joint positions before ordering laminate, keeping them away from the sink and dishwasher, where water is most likely to sit.
- Clear the worktops and the cupboards beneath them before fitting day, as the old tops and the sink need space to come out.
- Have the sink, tap and hob on site for templating, so the fabricator can cut the stone to the exact items you have bought.
Questions about kitchen worktop fitting in Washington
How much does kitchen worktop fitting cost in Washington?
Guide prices in Washington are about £450 to £1,100 including VAT for laminate worktops, supplied and fitted. The final price depends on the size of the kitchen and what is moving, and is set out in an itemised written quote.
Which parts of Washington do you work in?
All of them. Our Tyne and Wear coverage takes in the whole of Washington, including the NE37 and NE38 postcode districts, as well as surrounding towns such as Chester-le-Street. If you are unsure, send us your postcode.
How long does it take to fit new worktops?
Usually a day for laminate or solid wood in a typical kitchen, cut and jointed on site. Stone takes two visits: the fabricator templates once the base units are fixed and level, then cuts the worktops, the sink and hob openings and any drainer grooves, and fits them about one to two weeks later. In the meantime the sink is usually out of use, so plan meals around that gap.
How are laminate worktops joined at corners?
With either a mason's mitre or a joint strip. A mason's mitre is routed with a jig so the front edge profile turns the corner, then glued, sealed and pulled tight with connector bolts underneath. A joint strip is a metal or colour-matched profile fixed and sealed between the two lengths. Either way, every cut edge, including the sink and hob cut-outs, is sealed so water cannot swell the core.
Can I put hot pans on a quartz worktop?
It is safer not to. Quartz contains resin that can discolour or crack under sudden heat, so pans straight from the hob or oven should go on a trivet or pan stand. Granite copes better with heat but can still be marked or cracked by intense heat in one spot, and laminate and wood scorch easily. A trivet kept next to the hob protects any worktop.
