When does kitchen worktop fitting make sense in Tonbridge?

When a Tonbridge kitchen is about to be sold or let, new worktops and upstands can make the room look cared for without replacing any of the units.

If you have bought a kitchen online for your Tonbridge home, you may need a fitter to cut and joint the laminate or wood worktops properly on site. We work throughout Tonbridge (TN9) and across the wider Kent area.

What does the job involve?

Here is what usually goes into kitchen worktop fitting, adjusted to your Tonbridge kitchen after we have measured it:

  • Old worktops removed and taken away, with the sink and hob disconnected safely
  • Matching upstands fitted and the joint to the wall sealed
  • Solid wood oiled before and after fitting and fixed to allow seasonal movement
  • Laminate jointed with a mason's mitre or joint strips, and every cut edge sealed
  • Sink, tap and hob reconnected, with gas hobs connected by Gas Safe registered engineers
  • Free survey visit to measure the runs and check the base units are level

Fitting kitchens in older and newer Tonbridge homes

You will find Victorian terraces, weatherboarded cottages, 1930s semis and oast house conversions throughout Kent. Victorian terraces in the Medway towns and along the coast often have a narrow back-addition kitchen, while 1930s semis usually have a small kitchen beside a separate dining room.

Seaside terraces, permit parking and narrow village lanes can each make deliveries slower, so the route for long worktops is best checked at the survey. Water across Kent is hard, so limescale builds up quickly on taps and boiling water taps, and a scale-reducing filter is worth considering.

Do you need approval for kitchen worktop fitting in Tonbridge?

New worktops need no planning permission or Building Regulations approval in England. Disconnecting and reconnecting a gas hob must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and an electric hob or oven goes back on its existing circuit. Moving or adding sockets above the worktop on an existing kitchen circuit is not notifiable, but it must meet BS 7671. In a listed building, check before removing any original fitted joinery.

Listed weatherboarded and timber-framed cottages, oast conversions and homes in conservation areas such as historic Canterbury may need consent for new external vents.

Before you book kitchen worktop fitting in Tonbridge

  • Clear the worktops and the cupboards beneath them before fitting day, as the old tops and the sink need space to come out.
  • Before templating day at your Tonbridge home, make sure the sink, tap and hob are on site so the stone can be cut to them.
  • For a Tonbridge kitchen with stone worktops, ask whether the upstands will be cut from the same slab so the colour and pattern match.
  • Use trivets for hot pans on every type of worktop; sudden heat can scorch laminate and wood and mark or crack some stone.

Questions about kitchen worktop fitting in Tonbridge

How much does kitchen worktop fitting cost in Tonbridge?

Guide prices in Tonbridge are about £580 to £1,400 including VAT for laminate worktops, supplied and fitted. The final price depends on the size of the kitchen and what is moving, and is set out in an itemised written quote.

Which parts of Tonbridge do you work in?

All of them. Our Kent coverage takes in the whole of Tonbridge, including the TN9 postcode district, as well as surrounding towns such as Tunbridge Wells. If you are unsure, send us your postcode.

How are laminate worktops joined at corners?

With either a mason's mitre or a joint strip. A mason's mitre is routed with a jig so the front edge profile turns the corner, then glued, sealed and pulled tight with connector bolts underneath. A joint strip is a metal or colour-matched profile fixed and sealed between the two lengths. Either way, every cut edge, including the sink and hob cut-outs, is sealed so water cannot swell the core.

Will you fit stone worktops I have ordered myself?

Yes, alongside your stone supplier. Stone must be templated and fabricated by the supplier once the base units are fixed and level, so our part is getting the units ready, checking they are sound and reconnecting the sink, tap and hob after the stone is in. Laminate and wood worktops you have bought can be cut, jointed and fitted on site in the usual way.

How long does it take to fit new worktops?

Usually a day for laminate or solid wood in a typical kitchen, cut and jointed on site. Stone takes two visits: the fabricator templates once the base units are fixed and level, then cuts the worktops, the sink and hob openings and any drainer grooves, and fits them about one to two weeks later. In the meantime the sink is usually out of use, so plan meals around that gap.
