Is splashbacks and tiling right for your Rugby kitchen?

When a Rugby kitchen is getting stone worktops, upstands or a matching splashback are usually planned at the same time, so they are templated in one visit.

If the units in your Rugby kitchen are already fitted and only the walls are unfinished, we can take on the tiling or splashback as a job on its own. Homes right across Rugby are covered, as are nearby places such as Lutterworth, Daventry and the villages in between.

What is included in the work?

The exact scope is agreed after the survey, but a typical job in Rugby covers:

  • Socket and switch plates refitted by an electrician once the tiling is finished
  • Free survey visit to check the walls, agree the layout and give an itemised quote
  • Full-height or feature tiling behind the hob, sink or open shelving
  • Grout and sealant chosen for easy cleaning, with flexible sealant at the worktop joint
  • Stone upstands and splashbacks templated and fitted alongside a stone worktop
  • Toughened glass splashback measured after the worktops are fitted, with socket cut-outs

What should you budget for splashbacks and tiling in Rugby?

As a starting point for Rugby, these ranges include VAT at 20% and allow for typical labour costs in the West Midlands. Costs in the West Midlands sit close to the national guide.

Kitchens in homes around Rugby

The housing mix across Warwickshire includes Regency townhouses, timber-framed cottages, Victorian terraces and 1930s semis, so no two kitchen fits are quite alike. Victorian terraces in Nuneaton and Rugby often have a narrow back kitchen, while Regency townhouses in Leamington tend to have kitchens in former service rooms or flats.

Regency townhouses converted to flats may have no lift, and historic town centres can have restricted parking, so delivery needs arranging in advance. Water across Warwickshire is mostly hard, so limescale on taps and boiling water taps is common, and a filter or softener can help.

Regulations for kitchen work in Rugby

Tiling or fitting a splashback in England needs no planning permission or building regulations approval. If sockets or switches are moved to suit the new wall finish, that is electrical work to BS 7671; adding to an existing kitchen circuit is not notifiable under Part P, but a new circuit is. Behind a gas hob, follow the hob maker's clearance instructions, and in a listed building, removing historic tiles or panelling may need listed building consent.

Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwick and Leamington Spa have many listed buildings and conservation areas, so new vents or internal changes may need listed building consent or planning permission.

Getting the most from your splashbacks and tiling

  • Give fresh grout and sealant the full curing time shown on the packaging before scrubbing them or letting water sit on the joint at the back of the worktop.
  • Keep the tile boxes until the job is finished and note the batch number, so matching replacements can be found if a tile cracks later.
  • If your Warwickshire kitchen has a gas hob, check the hob instructions for splashback clearances before choosing glass or tiles for the wall behind it.
  • Choosing stone worktops? Decide on upstands or a full-height splashback before templating, so they can be cut from the same material and priced together.

Questions about splashbacks and tiling in Rugby

How much do splashbacks and tiling cost in Rugby?

Splashbacks and tiling in Rugby typically cost £150 to £400 including VAT for a tiled splashback, based on prices in the West Midlands. Larger or more involved jobs cost more, and your price is fixed in writing after a free survey visit.

Do you work near Rugby as well?

Yes. As well as Rugby itself, we cover the rest of Warwickshire and nearby towns such as Lutterworth and Daventry. The process is the same wherever the kitchen is.

Can heavy tiles or stone go on any kitchen wall?

Not always. Heavy tiles such as large-format porcelain or natural stone need a backing that can carry their weight and an adhesive suited to both the tile and the wall. Old plaster, painted plaster or plasterboard may need preparing, priming or replacing with a tile backer board first. We check the wall at the survey and follow the tile and adhesive makers' guidance.

Can a glass splashback go behind a gas hob?

Yes, usually, as long as the glass is toughened and the hob maker's instructions allow it. Toughened glass handles heat far better than ordinary glass, but a gas hob must still keep the clearances set out in its installation instructions, so we check those before ordering. The panel is measured after the worktops are fitted and made with cut-outs for sockets, because it cannot be cut once toughened.

When are splashbacks fitted during a kitchen installation?

Splashbacks go on near the end, once the worktops are fixed and the electrician has agreed where the sockets and switches will sit. Tiles need a finished worktop to start from, glass is measured off the fitted worktop, and stone upstands are templated at the same visit as the worktop. Faceplates go back on after tiling, so the sockets sit neatly against the new finish.
