Splashbacks and tiling in Kendal
Whether your Kendal kitchen is a narrow galley or an open-plan room, splashbacks and tiling follow the same careful order: survey, written scope, fit and a final check together.

When do splashbacks and tiling make sense in Kendal?
Landlords around Cumbria often prefer plain tiles with mid-grey grout or a glass panel, since both stand up to heavy use and are quick to clean between tenancies.
If the units in your Kendal kitchen are already fitted and only the walls are unfinished, we can take on the tiling or splashback as a job on its own. We cover all of Kendal, including the LA9 postcode district, and travel out to neighbouring towns across Cumbria.
What is included in the work?
Here is what usually goes into splashbacks and tiling, adjusted to your Kendal kitchen after we have measured it:
- Old tiles removed and walls prepared, patched or boarded where needed
- Grout and sealant chosen for easy cleaning, with flexible sealant at the worktop joint
- Toughened glass splashback measured after the worktops are fitted, with socket cut-outs
- Full-height or feature tiling behind the hob, sink or open shelving
- Socket and switch plates refitted by an electrician once the tiling is finished
- Tiled splashbacks between the worktop and wall units, set out from a centre line

Local homes and their kitchens
Across Cumbria you will often find stone-built cottages, Victorian terraces, post-war semis and converted farm buildings, and each shapes the kitchen differently. Stone cottages often have a small kitchen in a rear outshut or lean-to, while terraces in Carlisle and Barrow tend to have a narrow galley behind the back room.
Fell roads, narrow village lanes and farm tracks can limit the size of delivery vehicle, so worktop lengths and delivery times may need careful planning. Soft water is the norm across most of Cumbria, so limescale is less of a concern and taps and boiling water taps tend to stay cleaner.
Do you need approval for splashbacks and tiling in Kendal?
Tiling or fitting a splashback in England needs no planning permission or building regulations approval. If sockets or switches are moved to suit the new wall finish, that is electrical work to BS 7671; adding to an existing kitchen circuit is not notifiable under Part P, but a new circuit is. Behind a gas hob, follow the hob maker's clearance instructions, and in a listed building, removing historic tiles or panelling may need listed building consent.
Homes inside the Lake District National Park, along with listed buildings and conservation areas elsewhere, may need consent for a new extractor vent or changes to historic features.
Worth knowing before the fit
- Ask to see where the tiling will start before the first row goes on in your Kendal kitchen, so narrow cut tiles end up in corners rather than on show.
- Hold a few of your chosen tiles against the wall in your Kendal kitchen, in daylight and under the kitchen lights, before ordering the full quantity.
- If your Cumbria kitchen has a gas hob, check the hob instructions for splashback clearances before choosing glass or tiles for the wall behind it.
- Agree socket, switch and cooker hood positions before tiling starts; moving them afterwards means cutting tiles out and patching in replacements that may not match.
Questions about splashbacks and tiling in Kendal
How much do splashbacks and tiling cost in Kendal?
For a tiled splashback, budget around £140 to £380 including VAT in Kendal. That reflects typical costs in the North West; we confirm the actual figure in writing once we have measured up.
Do you work near Kendal as well?
Yes. As well as Kendal itself, we cover the rest of Cumbria and nearby towns such as Ulverston and Morecambe. The process is the same wherever the kitchen is.
Can a glass splashback go behind a gas hob?
Yes, usually, as long as the glass is toughened and the hob maker's instructions allow it. Toughened glass handles heat far better than ordinary glass, but a gas hob must still keep the clearances set out in its installation instructions, so we check those before ordering. The panel is measured after the worktops are fitted and made with cut-outs for sockets, because it cannot be cut once toughened.
Can you tile over existing kitchen tiles?
Sometimes, but it is rarely the better choice in a kitchen. Tiling over old tiles adds thickness, so sockets, switches and the edge against the wall units may no longer line up, and the new tiles rely on the old ones staying firmly bonded. If the existing tiles are sound and flat it can work for a small area; otherwise we remove them and prepare the wall.
When are splashbacks fitted during a kitchen installation?
Splashbacks go on near the end, once the worktops are fixed and the electrician has agreed where the sockets and switches will sit. Tiles need a finished worktop to start from, glass is measured off the fitted worktop, and stone upstands are templated at the same visit as the worktop. Faceplates go back on after tiling, so the sockets sit neatly against the new finish.
