Who usually needs hob and oven installation in Kendal?

Many households in Kendal switch from gas to induction when they refit, which can mean a new cooker circuit and the old gas supply capped off safely.

If your Kendal kitchen has an old ceramic hob with a cracked top, an induction replacement may fit the same cut-out, though the circuit still needs checking. Our Cumbria coverage reaches every part of Kendal (LA9) and out towards Ulverston.

What is included in the work?

Here is what usually goes into hob and oven installation, adjusted to your Kendal kitchen after we have measured it:

  • Gas supply moved to a new hob position, with pipework tested and made good
  • Old hob or oven disconnected safely and taken away for recycling
  • Induction and ceramic hobs wired to a suitable cooker circuit and tested
  • Appliance models checked against worktop cut-outs, oven housings and existing supplies
  • Built-in single and double ovens fixed into housings with their ventilation gaps
  • Laminate and wood worktop cut-outs made to the hob template; stone cut-outs by the fabricator

Local homes and their kitchens

Typical homes in this part of Cumbria include stone-built cottages, Victorian terraces, post-war semis and converted farm buildings. Stone cottages often have a small kitchen in a rear outshut or lean-to, while terraces in Carlisle and Barrow tend to have a narrow galley behind the back room.

Soft water is the norm across most of Cumbria, so limescale is less of a concern and taps and boiling water taps tend to stay cleaner. Fell roads, narrow village lanes and farm tracks can limit the size of delivery vehicle, so worktop lengths and delivery times may need careful planning.

What rules apply to hob and oven installation in Kendal?

In England, only a Gas Safe registered engineer may fit, connect or move a gas hob, cooker or gas pipework, and the installation is tightness tested afterwards. An induction hob often needs a dedicated cooker circuit; a new circuit is notifiable under Part P, so it is certified through a competent person scheme or building control. Connecting to an existing suitable circuit is not notifiable, but it must still meet BS 7671.

Homes inside the Lake District National Park, along with listed buildings and conservation areas elsewhere, may need consent for a new extractor vent or changes to historic features.

Before you book hob and oven installation in Kendal

  • If you are moving the hob in your Kendal kitchen, choose the cooker hood at the same time so the extraction and ducting can follow it.
  • If you are replacing an old cooker with a separate hob and oven in your Kendal kitchen, ask for the gas supply position and condition to be checked first.
  • Measure the gap for a range cooker at worktop height and at floor level, as older walls and thick skirting can narrow the space more than expected.
  • If the new hob sits away from the existing gas supply, allow for a new pipe run by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Questions about hob and oven installation in Kendal

How much does hob and oven installation cost in Kendal?

Hob and oven installation in Kendal typically costs £110 to £280 including VAT for connecting a gas hob to an existing supply, based on prices in the North West. Larger or more involved jobs cost more, and your price is fixed in writing after a free survey visit.

Do you cover all of Kendal?

Yes. We work across Kendal, including the LA9 postcode district, and nearby towns such as Ulverston and Morecambe. Book a free survey visit and we will arrange a time that suits you.

Why does a range cooker need a stability bracket?

Because a range cooker can tip forward if weight is put on an open oven door, which could damage the gas connection or injure someone. Gas and dual-fuel models are secured with a stability bracket or chain to the wall or floor behind, as the manufacturer specifies, and the cooker is levelled on a firm floor so its doors close properly and pans sit flat.

Does an induction hob need a new circuit?

Often, yes. Many induction hobs draw more current than an ordinary socket circuit can supply, so they are wired to a dedicated cooker circuit from the consumer unit. If you already have a cooker circuit of the right rating, the hob can usually connect to it. A new circuit is notifiable in England and Wales, and everywhere it must be tested and certified to BS 7671.

Who is allowed to connect a gas hob?

By law, anyone who carries out gas work for payment must be on the Gas Safe Register, in Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and anyone working on gas must be competent to do it. We only use Gas Safe registered engineers, and we strongly advise against fitting a gas hob yourself. The engineer connects the hob, tests the installation for tightness, checks the burners and the room's ventilation, and leaves the appliance safe to use. You can ask to see the engineer's Gas Safe ID card before work starts.
