Kitchen island installation in Belfast
Our kitchen island installation service covers Belfast and nearby places such as Castlereagh and Newtownabbey, with a free survey visit and an itemised written quote as the first step.

Is kitchen island installation right for your Belfast kitchen?
Owners of newer homes with a solid concrete ground floor often want an island sink, and their first question is how the waste and supplies will reach it.
If your builder is adding a rear extension to a home in County Antrim, they can leave ducts in the new floor slab, which makes power and water to an island far simpler. We cover all of Belfast, including the BT1, BT2, BT3, BT4, BT5 and BT6 postcode districts, and travel out to neighbouring towns across County Antrim.

Kitchens in homes around Belfast
Typical homes in this part of County Antrim include red-brick terraces, Victorian villas, post-war estate houses and rural bungalows. Red-brick terraces in Belfast often have a narrow kitchen in the return, while estate houses and rural bungalows tend to have a separate kitchen with room for a table.
Mains water across most of County Antrim is soft, so limescale is less of a problem and taps and boiling water taps tend to stay cleaner. Terraced streets with entries at the back, city flats with booked lifts and country lanes can each affect deliveries, so the route for worktops is checked at the survey.
What rules apply to kitchen island installation in Belfast?
In Northern Ireland, adding an island to a kitchen needs no planning permission, and fitting the units needs no building control application. There is no notification scheme for domestic electrical work, but cables to an island should be installed and tested to BS 7671 and certified. New drainage connections go to council building control, Technical Booklet K covers ventilation for an island hood, and gas work is for Gas Safe registered engineers only.
Listed buildings and conservation areas in older parts of Belfast and the county towns may need consent for new vents, and apartment owners usually need management consent.
Getting the most from your kitchen island installation
- Decide what the island will store before ordering units: deep pan drawers near the hob, a bin pull-out by the sink and shallow cupboards on the seating side.
- Choose the stools after the island height is agreed, because worktop height and bar height need different stools and a different overhang.
- Find out whether your Belfast home has a suspended timber or solid concrete ground floor; air bricks low on the outside walls often point to timber.
- Common guidance is around a metre of clear walkway round an island, and more where two people cook or a dishwasher door opens.
Questions about kitchen island installation in Belfast
How much does kitchen island installation cost in Belfast?
Guide prices in Belfast are about £1,800 to £4,400 including VAT for a mid-range island with no services, supplied and fitted. The final price depends on the size of the kitchen and what is moving, and is set out in an itemised written quote.
Do you cover all of Belfast?
Yes. We work across Belfast, including the BT1, BT2, BT3, BT4, BT5 and BT6 postcode districts, and nearby towns such as Castlereagh and Newtownabbey. Book a free survey visit and we will arrange a time that suits you.
How is a kitchen island fixed in place?
An island is fixed to the floor, not just stood on it. Battens or brackets are screwed down within the island footprint and the base units are fixed to them, so the island cannot shift when someone leans on the overhang. The units are levelled so the worktop matches the height of the main runs, and on underfloor heating the fixing points are planned around the pipes or cables.
What extraction works over an island hob?
There are three main options. An island hood hangs above the hob from the ceiling; a ceiling extractor sits almost flush with the plaster; and a downdraft extractor rises from the worktop behind the hob and is ducted through the plinth or under the floor. Ducted versions need a route to an outside wall. Recirculating versions filter grease and smells but do not remove moisture, so the room needs another extract.
Should the floor run under a kitchen island?
Often, yes. Laying a tiled or sheet floor right through before the island goes in gives a continuous surface and makes later layout changes easier, though it uses more material. Floating click floors are usually laid up to the island instead, because fixing units through them stops the floor moving. Underfloor heating is normally kept to the open floor, not under the units. We agree the order at the survey.
