Is kitchen electrics right for your Belfast kitchen?

Many kitchens in Belfast were wired when a kettle and a toaster were the only things on the worktop, so a refit is the natural time to put sockets where they are really used.

Some Belfast homeowners like their kitchen but run extension leads along the worktop; extra sockets on the existing circuit can solve that without a full refit. If your home is in Belfast or close by in Castlereagh or Newtownabbey, the same survey, quote and fitting process applies.

What is included in the work?

Your written quote lists everything included. For kitchen electrics, that normally means:

  • First-fix cables and back boxes run before plastering or boarding
  • Socket positions planned around worktop appliances, the kettle spot and any breakfast bar
  • Accessible isolation switches for integrated appliances, reachable without pulling units out
  • Testing, the correct certificate, and notification of the work where it is required
  • Supplies for the cooker hood, under-cabinet lights and a boiling water tap
  • A dedicated circuit for an oven, range cooker or induction hob where needed

Guide prices for kitchen electrics in Belfast

Typical kitchen electrics prices for homes in Belfast, including VAT and adjusted for Northern Ireland. Your own figure depends on the size of the kitchen, the layout and what is moving. Prices in Northern Ireland usually come in below the national guide, as labour rates are lower than in the South East.

Local homes and their kitchens

The housing mix across County Antrim includes red-brick terraces, Victorian villas, post-war estate houses and rural bungalows, so no two kitchen fits are quite alike. Red-brick terraces in Belfast often have a narrow kitchen in the return, while estate houses and rural bungalows tend to have a separate kitchen with room for a table.

Mains water across most of County Antrim is soft, so limescale is less of a problem and taps and boiling water taps tend to stay cleaner. Terraced streets with entries at the back, city flats with booked lifts and country lanes can each affect deliveries, so the route for worktops is checked at the survey.

Do you need approval for kitchen electrics in Belfast?

Northern Ireland has no requirement to notify domestic electrical work in the way England and Wales do, so new kitchen circuits and extra sockets are not registered with the council. The work should still be designed, installed and tested to BS 7671, with an Electrical Installation Certificate for a new circuit and a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate for additions. Keep both for when you sell or let the home.

Listed buildings and conservation areas in older parts of Belfast and the county towns may need consent for new vents, and apartment owners usually need management consent.

Worth knowing before the fit

  • Ask for USB sockets or extra doubles near the breakfast bar at first fix; changing a faceplate later is easy, adding a new box is not.
  • Choose socket and switch finishes before second fix, especially metal faceplates, so they arrive in time and sit well with the handles and tap.
  • If you live in a flat in Belfast, find out where your consumer unit and meter are, as some sit in communal cupboards that need the managing agent's access.
  • Count the appliances that will live on the worktop, then add a couple of spare sockets; extension leads across a worktop are a poor substitute.

Questions about kitchen electrics in Belfast

How much do kitchen electrics cost in Belfast?

For extra sockets or spurs on existing circuits, budget around £220 to £440 including VAT in Belfast. That reflects typical costs in Northern Ireland; we confirm the actual figure in writing once we have measured up.

Do you cover all of Belfast?

Yes. We work across Belfast, including the BT1, BT2, BT3, BT4, BT5 and BT6 postcode districts, and nearby towns such as Castlereagh and Newtownabbey. Book a free survey visit and we will arrange a time that suits you.

Do I need an electrician to add sockets in a kitchen?

Yes, any kitchen wiring is a job for a qualified electrician. In England, adding sockets to an existing circuit is not notifiable, but it must meet BS 7671 and should be recorded on a Minor Works Certificate. In Wales the same job is notifiable because it extends a circuit in a kitchen. Scotland and Northern Ireland have no notification step, but the same wiring standard applies.

What is first fix and second fix in kitchen electrics?

First fix is the hidden part: running cables and fixing back boxes into walls and ceilings after the old kitchen is out and before plastering. Second fix comes after the units, worktops and tiling are in, when sockets, switches and appliance connections are fitted and the whole installation is tested. Getting positions right at first fix matters, because moving a box after tiling means cutting tiles.

Does an induction hob need its own circuit?

Usually, yes. Most induction hobs draw too much power to run from a plug socket, so they are wired to a dedicated cooker circuit from the consumer unit. One circuit can sometimes feed both a hob and an oven if the cable and protection are sized for them. The electrician checks the hob rating against the existing circuit at the survey and tells you whether a new one is needed.
