When does hob and oven installation make sense in Tyne and Wear?

Families in Tyne and Wear adding a double oven may find the existing circuit is not rated for it, so planning the electrics early avoids a delay on fitting day.

If the oven in your Tyne and Wear kitchen has failed, a like-for-like built-in replacement is usually a short job, provided the new model fits the existing housing.

What does hob and oven installation in Tyne and Wear include?

After the survey visit we write the scope down. For hob and oven installation in Tyne and Wear it usually covers:

  • Appliance models checked against worktop cut-outs, oven housings and existing supplies
  • Laminate and wood worktop cut-outs made to the hob template; stone cut-outs by the fabricator
  • Gas hobs and cookers connected and tightness tested by a Gas Safe registered engineer
  • Induction and ceramic hobs wired to a suitable cooker circuit and tested
  • Built-in single and double ovens fixed into housings with their ventilation gaps
  • Range cookers levelled, with a stability bracket fitted to gas and dual-fuel models
  • Gas supply moved to a new hob position, with pipework tested and made good
  • Old hob or oven disconnected safely and taken away for recycling

Kitchens in homes across Tyne and Wear

Across Tyne and Wear you will often find tyneside flats, Victorian terraces, 1930s semis and post-war council-built houses, and each shapes the kitchen differently. Tyneside flats often have a narrow kitchen in the rear offshoot, while 1930s semis and ex-council houses tend to have a small square kitchen at the back.

Hardness varies across Tyne and Wear, from fairly soft around Newcastle to harder in parts of Sunderland, so check with your supplier before choosing a filter. Back lanes behind terraced streets can help deliveries, but upper Tyneside flats have their own internal stair, so long worktops need careful handling.

In an upper Tyneside flat, the kitchen often sits in a narrow offshoot, so planning a usable layout within that width is the main task. Terraces and semis frequently have a separate kitchen that owners open into the dining room.

Rules for hob and oven installation in Tyne and Wear

In England, only a Gas Safe registered engineer may fit, connect or move a gas hob, cooker or gas pipework, and the installation is tightness tested afterwards. An induction hob often needs a dedicated cooker circuit; a new circuit is notifiable under Part P, so it is certified through a competent person scheme or building control. Connecting to an existing suitable circuit is not notifiable, but it must still meet BS 7671.

In conservation areas and listed buildings, such as parts of central Newcastle and Tynemouth, a new external vent or changes to historic features may need consent.

Before you start

  • A range cooker needs a level, firm floor and, for gas and dual-fuel models, a stability bracket so it cannot tip when the door is loaded.
  • If the new hob sits away from the existing gas supply, allow for a new pipe run by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
  • Measure the oven housing against the installation dimensions, including the ventilation gaps at the back or base that the manufacturer requires.
  • Follow the hood and hob manufacturers' instructions on the minimum distance between them; gas hobs usually need more clearance than induction.
  • Before buying an induction hob for your Tyne and Wear home, check the rating of the cooker circuit at the consumer unit, or ask for it to be checked at the survey.
  • If your Tyne and Wear home has an open-flued gas appliance, mention it at the survey, because any new extraction above the hob will need a spillage test.

Questions about hob and oven installation in Tyne and Wear

How much does hob and oven installation cost in Tyne and Wear?

For connecting a gas hob to an existing supply, budget around £110 to £270 including VAT in Tyne and Wear. That reflects typical costs in the North East; we confirm the actual figure in writing once we have measured up.

Do you cover the whole of Tyne and Wear?

Yes. We carry out hob and oven installation across Tyne and Wear, including Newcastle upon Tyne, Sunderland, South Shields and Gateshead. Every job starts with a free survey visit and an itemised written quote.

Do built-in ovens need ventilation?

Yes. Built-in ovens release heat, and their installation instructions set the gaps and openings the housing must leave, often at the back or beneath the oven. Blocking them can overheat the surrounding units and the oven's own controls. An oven under the worktop and one in a tall housing have different requirements, so we check the instructions for your model before fitting.

Who is allowed to connect a gas hob?

By law, anyone who carries out gas work for payment must be on the Gas Safe Register, in Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and anyone working on gas must be competent to do it. We only use Gas Safe registered engineers, and we strongly advise against fitting a gas hob yourself. The engineer connects the hob, tests the installation for tightness, checks the burners and the room's ventilation, and leaves the appliance safe to use. You can ask to see the engineer's Gas Safe ID card before work starts.

Does an induction hob need a new circuit?

Often, yes. Many induction hobs draw more current than an ordinary socket circuit can supply, so they are wired to a dedicated cooker circuit from the consumer unit. If you already have a cooker circuit of the right rating, the hob can usually connect to it. A new circuit is notifiable in England and Wales, and everywhere it must be tested and certified to BS 7671.
