Hob and oven installation in Edinburgh
Our hob and oven installation work covers the whole of Edinburgh, and we also work in neighbouring the Lothians and Fife.
Is hob and oven installation right for your Edinburgh kitchen?
Many households in Edinburgh switch from gas to induction when they refit, which can mean a new cooker circuit and the old gas supply capped off safely.
Keen cooks across Edinburgh often choose a range cooker, which needs a level floor, the right clearances to the units and a stability bracket on gas models.
What does hob and oven installation in Edinburgh include?
Here is what usually goes into hob and oven installation, adjusted to your Edinburgh kitchen after we have measured it:
- Appliance models checked against worktop cut-outs, oven housings and existing supplies
- Laminate and wood worktop cut-outs made to the hob template; stone cut-outs by the fabricator
- Gas hobs and cookers connected and tightness tested by a Gas Safe registered engineer
- Induction and ceramic hobs wired to a suitable cooker circuit and tested
- Built-in single and double ovens fixed into housings with their ventilation gaps
- Range cookers levelled, with a stability bracket fitted to gas and dual-fuel models
- Gas supply moved to a new hob position, with pipework tested and made good
- Old hob or oven disconnected safely and taken away for recycling

Kitchens in homes across Edinburgh
You will find Victorian tenement flats, Georgian New Town flats, stone villas and post-war council-built houses throughout Edinburgh. Tenement flats often have a small kitchen off the hall, while Georgian flats may have kitchens in former bedrooms or reception rooms with tall ceilings.
Edinburgh's mains water is soft, so limescale is rarely a problem and taps, sinks and boiling water taps stay cleaner for longer. Common stairs without lifts, controlled parking and cobbled streets in older parts of the city mean deliveries and stair carries need planning before fitting day.
Tenement and Georgian flats often have kitchens in small rooms, and opening one into the living room needs a building warrant if the wall is load-bearing, and can need one even if it is not, where the change affects the escape route or fire separation in a flat. Stone villas and bungalows on the edge of the city more often suit a larger supply-and-fit kitchen.
Rules for hob and oven installation in Edinburgh
In Scotland, gas hobs, cookers and pipework must be fitted and tested by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Replacing a hob or oven, or adding a cooker circuit in a house, does not normally need a building warrant, but the electrics must meet building standards 4.5 and 4.6 and BS 7671. Ask for an Electrical Installation Certificate for any new circuit.
The Old and New Towns form a World Heritage Site with many listed buildings, so new vents or internal changes may need consent, and tenement neighbours may need to agree.
Before you start
- A range cooker needs a level, firm floor and, for gas and dual-fuel models, a stability bracket so it cannot tip when the door is loaded.
- If the new hob sits away from the existing gas supply, allow for a new pipe run by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
- Measure the oven housing against the installation dimensions, including the ventilation gaps at the back or base that the manufacturer requires.
- Check the induction hob's power rating against your existing cooker circuit, as induction hobs often need a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit.
- If you are replacing an old cooker with a separate hob and oven in your Edinburgh kitchen, ask for the gas supply position and condition to be checked first.
- If you are moving the hob in your Edinburgh kitchen, choose the cooker hood at the same time so the extraction and ducting can follow it.
Questions about hob and oven installation in Edinburgh
How much does hob and oven installation cost in Edinburgh?
Hob and oven installation in Edinburgh typically costs £120 to £310 including VAT for connecting a gas hob to an existing supply, based on prices in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Larger or more involved jobs cost more, and your price is fixed in writing after a free survey visit.
Do you cover the whole of Edinburgh?
Yes. We carry out hob and oven installation across Edinburgh. Every job starts with a free survey visit and an itemised written quote.
Do built-in ovens need ventilation?
Yes. Built-in ovens release heat, and their installation instructions set the gaps and openings the housing must leave, often at the back or beneath the oven. Blocking them can overheat the surrounding units and the oven's own controls. An oven under the worktop and one in a tall housing have different requirements, so we check the instructions for your model before fitting.
Who is allowed to connect a gas hob?
By law, anyone who carries out gas work for payment must be on the Gas Safe Register, in Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and anyone working on gas must be competent to do it. We only use Gas Safe registered engineers, and we strongly advise against fitting a gas hob yourself. The engineer connects the hob, tests the installation for tightness, checks the burners and the room's ventilation, and leaves the appliance safe to use. You can ask to see the engineer's Gas Safe ID card before work starts.
Why does a range cooker need a stability bracket?
Because a range cooker can tip forward if weight is put on an open oven door, which could damage the gas connection or injure someone. Gas and dual-fuel models are secured with a stability bracket or chain to the wall or floor behind, as the manufacturer specifies, and the cooker is levelled on a firm floor so its doors close properly and pans sit flat.
