Thinking about hob and oven installation in Cambridge?
Landlords in Cambridgeshire replacing a worn cooker between tenancies need a safe gas connection or a suitable circuit, with the work properly recorded for their property files.
Many households in Cambridge switch from gas to induction when they refit, which can mean a new cooker circuit and the old gas supply capped off safely. We work throughout Cambridge (CB5, CB21, CB22, CB23 and CB24) and across the wider Cambridgeshire area.
What does the job involve?
Your written quote lists everything included. For hob and oven installation, that normally means:
- Appliance models checked against worktop cut-outs, oven housings and existing supplies
- Built-in single and double ovens fixed into housings with their ventilation gaps
- Range cookers levelled, with a stability bracket fitted to gas and dual-fuel models
- Old hob or oven disconnected safely and taken away for recycling
- Induction and ceramic hobs wired to a suitable cooker circuit and tested
- Gas supply moved to a new hob position, with pipework tested and made good

House types around Cambridge and what they mean for a kitchen
The housing mix across Cambridgeshire includes Victorian terraces, 1930s semis, post-war estate houses and fenland bungalows and farmhouses, so no two kitchen fits are quite alike. Terraced houses in Cambridge and Peterborough often have a narrow galley at the back, while Fen bungalows tend to have a simple square kitchen beside the living room.
Fen roads and farm tracks can be narrow for delivery lorries, and city-centre terraces often have permit parking and no rear access for long worktops. Water across Cambridgeshire is very hard, so limescale on taps and boiling water taps is common and a filter or softener is worth thinking about.
Regulations for kitchen work in Cambridge
In England, only a Gas Safe registered engineer may fit, connect or move a gas hob, cooker or gas pipework, and the installation is tightness tested afterwards. An induction hob often needs a dedicated cooker circuit; a new circuit is notifiable under Part P, so it is certified through a competent person scheme or building control. Connecting to an existing suitable circuit is not notifiable, but it must still meet BS 7671.
Listed houses in historic centres such as Cambridge and Ely may need consent for internal changes or a new vent, although a straightforward kitchen fit needs no planning permission.
Getting the most from your hob and oven installation
- Ask the Gas Safe engineer for a record of the work and keep it with your home documents, especially if you let a property in Cambridgeshire.
- Keep the hob's cut-out template and installation manual with the worktop plan, so a stone worktop for your kitchen in Cambridgeshire can be cut correctly by the fabricator.
- If you are replacing an old cooker with a separate hob and oven in your Cambridge kitchen, ask for the gas supply position and condition to be checked first.
- Measure the oven housing against the installation dimensions, including the ventilation gaps at the back or base that the manufacturer requires.
Questions about hob and oven installation in Cambridge
How much does hob and oven installation cost in Cambridge?
Guide prices in Cambridge are about £130 to £320 including VAT for connecting a gas hob to an existing supply. The final price depends on the size of the kitchen and what is moving, and is set out in an itemised written quote.
Which parts of Cambridge do you work in?
All of them. Our Cambridgeshire coverage takes in the whole of Cambridge, including the CB5, CB21, CB22, CB23 and CB24 postcode districts, as well as surrounding towns such as Newmarket. If you are unsure, send us your postcode.
Who is allowed to connect a gas hob?
By law, anyone who carries out gas work for payment must be on the Gas Safe Register, in Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and anyone working on gas must be competent to do it. We only use Gas Safe registered engineers, and we strongly advise against fitting a gas hob yourself. The engineer connects the hob, tests the installation for tightness, checks the burners and the room's ventilation, and leaves the appliance safe to use. You can ask to see the engineer's Gas Safe ID card before work starts.
Why does a range cooker need a stability bracket?
Because a range cooker can tip forward if weight is put on an open oven door, which could damage the gas connection or injure someone. Gas and dual-fuel models are secured with a stability bracket or chain to the wall or floor behind, as the manufacturer specifies, and the cooker is levelled on a firm floor so its doors close properly and pans sit flat.
Does an induction hob need a new circuit?
Often, yes. Many induction hobs draw more current than an ordinary socket circuit can supply, so they are wired to a dedicated cooker circuit from the consumer unit. If you already have a cooker circuit of the right rating, the hob can usually connect to it. A new circuit is notifiable in England and Wales, and everywhere it must be tested and certified to BS 7671.
