What prompts kitchen worktop fitting in Hertfordshire?

Solid wood that has blackened around the sink and tap is a common reason people in Hertfordshire ask about replacing their worktops with something new.

Many people in Hertfordshire choose quartz or granite when they upgrade, and need the base units fixed and level before the fabricator can come to template.

What does kitchen worktop fitting in Hertfordshire include?

Every kitchen is different, so we confirm the scope in writing. Most jobs of this kind include:

Kitchens in homes across Hertfordshire

You will find 1930s semis, post-war new town houses, Victorian terraces and new-build estates throughout Hertfordshire. Stevenage and Hemel Hempstead new-town houses often have a small galley, while 1930s semis tend to have a narrow kitchen beside the dining room.

Hertfordshire's water is very hard, mostly drawn from chalk, so limescale on taps and boiling water taps is common and a softener or filter is worth considering. Commuter-town streets often have tight parking, and estate houses with shared parking courts can mean carrying units some distance to the front door.

Removing the wall between kitchen and dining room is a common job in a 1930s semi, often with a peninsula to separate cooking from seating. New-town houses often have small kitchens that benefit from a better layout, taller wall units and integrated appliances to save floor space.

Rules for kitchen worktop fitting in Hertfordshire

New worktops need no planning permission or Building Regulations approval in England. Disconnecting and reconnecting a gas hob must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and an electric hob or oven goes back on its existing circuit. Moving or adding sockets above the worktop on an existing kitchen circuit is not notifiable, but it must meet BS 7671. In a listed building, check before removing any original fitted joinery.

A kitchen fit needs no planning permission, but listed buildings and conservation areas, including parts of St Albans and Welwyn Garden City, may need consent for external vents.

Before you start

  • Plan the joints: keep laminate joints away from the sink where possible, while stone joints are positioned by the fabricator to suit the slabs.
  • Have the sink, tap and hob on site for templating, so the fabricator can cut the stone to the exact items you have bought.
  • Solid wood needs regular re-oiling and should not be left with standing water around the sink, tap or kettle.
  • Stone worktops are templated only once the base units are fixed and level, so allow one to two weeks between fitting and finishing.
  • Before templating day at your Hertfordshire home, make sure the sink, tap and hob are on site so the stone can be cut to them.
  • If your Hertfordshire kitchen has a gas hob, a Gas Safe registered engineer needs to disconnect it before the old worktops come off.

Questions about kitchen worktop fitting in Hertfordshire

How much does kitchen worktop fitting cost in Hertfordshire?

For laminate worktops, supplied and fitted, budget around £540 to £1,300 including VAT in Hertfordshire. That reflects typical costs in the East of England; we confirm the actual figure in writing once we have measured up.

Do you cover the whole of Hertfordshire?

Yes. We carry out kitchen worktop fitting across Hertfordshire, including Watford, Hemel Hempstead, Stevenage and St Albans. Every job starts with a free survey visit and an itemised written quote.

Will you fit stone worktops I have ordered myself?

Yes, alongside your stone supplier. Stone must be templated and fabricated by the supplier once the base units are fixed and level, so our part is getting the units ready, checking they are sound and reconnecting the sink, tap and hob after the stone is in. Laminate and wood worktops you have bought can be cut, jointed and fitted on site in the usual way.

How long does it take to fit new worktops?

Usually a day for laminate or solid wood in a typical kitchen, cut and jointed on site. Stone takes two visits: the fabricator templates once the base units are fixed and level, then cuts the worktops, the sink and hob openings and any drainer grooves, and fits them about one to two weeks later. In the meantime the sink is usually out of use, so plan meals around that gap.

How are laminate worktops joined at corners?

With either a mason's mitre or a joint strip. A mason's mitre is routed with a jig so the front edge profile turns the corner, then glued, sealed and pulled tight with connector bolts underneath. A joint strip is a metal or colour-matched profile fixed and sealed between the two lengths. Either way, every cut edge, including the sink and hob cut-outs, is sealed so water cannot swell the core.
