Why kitchen worktop fitting for a Pembroke Dock home?

If your Dyfed kitchen still has a dated tiled or laminate surface, new worktops often go in with a new sink, tap and splashback at the same time.

When a Pembroke Dock kitchen is about to be sold or let, new worktops and upstands can make the room look cared for without replacing any of the units. Our Dyfed coverage reaches every part of Pembroke Dock (SA72) and out towards Milford Haven.

What is included in the work?

After the survey visit we write the scope down. For kitchen worktop fitting in Pembroke Dock it usually covers:

  • Sink, tap and hob reconnected, with gas hobs connected by Gas Safe registered engineers
  • Quartz, granite or sintered stone templated once the base units are fixed and level
  • Solid wood oiled before and after fitting and fixed to allow seasonal movement
  • Laminate jointed with a mason's mitre or joint strips, and every cut edge sealed
  • Undermount sink and hob cut-outs cut and finished by the stone fabricator
  • Old worktops removed and taken away, with the sink and hob disconnected safely

What should you budget for kitchen worktop fitting in Pembroke Dock?

As a starting point for Pembroke Dock, these ranges include VAT at 20% and allow for typical labour costs in Wales. Prices in Wales usually come in below the national guide, as labour rates are lower than in the South East.

Fitting kitchens in older and newer Pembroke Dock homes

The housing mix across Dyfed includes stone cottages, Victorian terraces, farmhouses and post-war bungalows, so no two kitchen fits are quite alike. Stone cottages and farmhouses often have a small kitchen in a rear extension, while terraces in Llanelli and Aberystwyth tend to have a narrow galley at the back.

Rural farm tracks, steep coastal lanes and long distances between villages can affect delivery vehicles, so worktop lengths and timing need planning ahead. Mains water across most of Dyfed is soft, so limescale is rarely a big problem, though farms on private supplies may need their own filtering.

Building regulations, electrics and gas in Pembroke Dock

In Wales, replacing worktops needs no planning permission or Building Regulations approval in itself. The electrics are where Wales differs: moving or adding a socket above the new worktop extends a circuit within a kitchen, which is notifiable under Part P in Wales, so it is certified through a competent person scheme or building control. Gas hobs are disconnected and reconnected only by Gas Safe registered engineers.

Homes in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park or Bannau Brycheiniog, listed cottages and conservation areas may need consent for a new external vent or historic alterations.

Before you book kitchen worktop fitting in Pembroke Dock

  • For a Pembroke Dock kitchen with stone worktops, ask whether the upstands will be cut from the same slab so the colour and pattern match.
  • Clear the worktops and the cupboards beneath them before fitting day, as the old tops and the sink need space to come out.
  • If your Pembroke Dock kitchen has a gas hob, a Gas Safe registered engineer needs to disconnect it before the old worktops come off.
  • Quartz and granite are heavy; the units must be sound, level and well fixed, and any swollen or weak carcasses replaced first.

Questions about kitchen worktop fitting in Pembroke Dock

How much does kitchen worktop fitting cost in Pembroke Dock?

Guide prices in Pembroke Dock are about £460 to £1,100 including VAT for laminate worktops, supplied and fitted. The final price depends on the size of the kitchen and what is moving, and is set out in an itemised written quote.

Which parts of Pembroke Dock do you work in?

All of them. Our Dyfed coverage takes in the whole of Pembroke Dock, including the SA72 postcode district, as well as surrounding towns such as Milford Haven. If you are unsure, send us your postcode.

How do I look after a solid wood worktop?

Oil it regularly and keep it away from standing water. Wood is oiled on every face before fitting and given further coats once in place, then re-oiled more often in the first months. Wipe up round the sink and tap, and do not leave wet cloths or a dripping kettle on it. It is fixed with slotted brackets so it can expand and shrink with the seasons without cracking.

Can I put hot pans on a quartz worktop?

It is safer not to. Quartz contains resin that can discolour or crack under sudden heat, so pans straight from the hob or oven should go on a trivet or pan stand. Granite copes better with heat but can still be marked or cracked by intense heat in one spot, and laminate and wood scorch easily. A trivet kept next to the hob protects any worktop.

How are laminate worktops joined at corners?

With either a mason's mitre or a joint strip. A mason's mitre is routed with a jig so the front edge profile turns the corner, then glued, sealed and pulled tight with connector bolts underneath. A joint strip is a metal or colour-matched profile fixed and sealed between the two lengths. Either way, every cut edge, including the sink and hob cut-outs, is sealed so water cannot swell the core.
