Is kitchen worktop fitting right for your Derby kitchen?

Some homeowners across Derbyshire have already ordered stone worktops from a supplier and need someone to fix and level the base units so templating can go ahead.

When a Derby kitchen is about to be sold or let, new worktops and upstands can make the room look cared for without replacing any of the units. Homes right across Derby are covered, as are nearby places such as Belper, Ilkeston and the villages in between.

What does kitchen worktop fitting in Derby include?

Your written quote lists everything included. For kitchen worktop fitting, that normally means:

  • Sink, tap and hob reconnected, with gas hobs connected by Gas Safe registered engineers
  • Old worktops removed and taken away, with the sink and hob disconnected safely
  • Undermount sink and hob cut-outs cut and finished by the stone fabricator
  • Free survey visit to measure the runs and check the base units are level
  • Matching upstands fitted and the joint to the wall sealed
  • Solid wood oiled before and after fitting and fixed to allow seasonal movement

What kind of kitchens do we fit in Derby?

In and around Derby, homes range across gritstone and limestone cottages, Victorian terraces, 1930s semis and former mining village terraces. Terraces in Derby and Chesterfield often have a long galley behind the back room, while stone cottages in the Peak District may have a small kitchen in a rear extension.

Water hardness varies across Derbyshire, so check with your supplier; where it is harder, limescale on taps and boiling water taps is worth planning for. Steep hill villages and narrow lanes can limit delivery vehicles, while terraced streets in the towns may have little parking near the front door.

Do you need approval for kitchen worktop fitting in Derby?

New worktops need no planning permission or Building Regulations approval in England. Disconnecting and reconnecting a gas hob must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and an electric hob or oven goes back on its existing circuit. Moving or adding sockets above the worktop on an existing kitchen circuit is not notifiable, but it must meet BS 7671. In a listed building, check before removing any original fitted joinery.

Homes in the Peak District National Park, listed buildings and conservation areas may need consent for a new vent on a visible wall or alterations to historic features.

Getting the most from your kitchen worktop fitting

  • If your Derby kitchen has a gas hob, a Gas Safe registered engineer needs to disconnect it before the old worktops come off.
  • Before templating day at your Derby home, make sure the sink, tap and hob are on site so the stone can be cut to them.
  • Check that full-length worktops can get into your Derby home; long lengths need a clear, straight route through the front door and hall.
  • Use trivets for hot pans on every type of worktop; sudden heat can scorch laminate and wood and mark or crack some stone.

Questions about kitchen worktop fitting in Derby

How much does kitchen worktop fitting cost in Derby?

For laminate worktops, supplied and fitted, budget around £480 to £1,200 including VAT in Derby. That reflects typical costs in the East Midlands; we confirm the actual figure in writing once we have measured up.

Which parts of Derby do you work in?

All of them. Our Derbyshire coverage takes in the whole of Derby, including the DE1 postcode district, as well as surrounding towns such as Belper. If you are unsure, send us your postcode.

How are laminate worktops joined at corners?

With either a mason's mitre or a joint strip. A mason's mitre is routed with a jig so the front edge profile turns the corner, then glued, sealed and pulled tight with connector bolts underneath. A joint strip is a metal or colour-matched profile fixed and sealed between the two lengths. Either way, every cut edge, including the sink and hob cut-outs, is sealed so water cannot swell the core.

How long does it take to fit new worktops?

Usually a day for laminate or solid wood in a typical kitchen, cut and jointed on site. Stone takes two visits: the fabricator templates once the base units are fixed and level, then cuts the worktops, the sink and hob openings and any drainer grooves, and fits them about one to two weeks later. In the meantime the sink is usually out of use, so plan meals around that gap.

Can I put hot pans on a quartz worktop?

It is safer not to. Quartz contains resin that can discolour or crack under sudden heat, so pans straight from the hob or oven should go on a trivet or pan stand. Granite copes better with heat but can still be marked or cracked by intense heat in one spot, and laminate and wood scorch easily. A trivet kept next to the hob protects any worktop.
