When does kitchen worktop fitting make sense in Belfast?

Some homeowners across County Antrim have already ordered stone worktops from a supplier and need someone to fix and level the base units so templating can go ahead.

When a Belfast kitchen is about to be sold or let, new worktops and upstands can make the room look cared for without replacing any of the units. We cover all of Belfast, including the BT1, BT2, BT3, BT4, BT5 and BT6 postcode districts, and travel out to neighbouring towns across County Antrim.

What is included in the work?

After the survey visit we write the scope down. For kitchen worktop fitting in Belfast it usually covers:

  • Laminate jointed with a mason's mitre or joint strips, and every cut edge sealed
  • Solid wood oiled before and after fitting and fixed to allow seasonal movement
  • Old worktops removed and taken away, with the sink and hob disconnected safely
  • Matching upstands fitted and the joint to the wall sealed
  • Sink, tap and hob reconnected, with gas hobs connected by Gas Safe registered engineers
  • Undermount sink and hob cut-outs cut and finished by the stone fabricator

What should you budget for kitchen worktop fitting in Belfast?

Use these ranges to plan your budget. They include VAT, reflect costs in Northern Ireland, and are firmed up once we have seen your Belfast kitchen. Labour rates in Northern Ireland are generally lower than in London and the South East, so these ranges are a little below the national guide.

Local homes and their kitchens

The housing mix across County Antrim includes red-brick terraces, Victorian villas, post-war estate houses and rural bungalows, so no two kitchen fits are quite alike. Red-brick terraces in Belfast often have a narrow kitchen in the return, while estate houses and rural bungalows tend to have a separate kitchen with room for a table.

Terraced streets with entries at the back, city flats with booked lifts and country lanes can each affect deliveries, so the route for worktops is checked at the survey. Mains water across most of County Antrim is soft, so limescale is less of a problem and taps and boiling water taps tend to stay cleaner.

What rules apply to kitchen worktop fitting in Belfast?

In Northern Ireland, new worktops need no planning permission or building control application. Gas hobs must be disconnected and reconnected by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and any electrical changes should be installed and tested to BS 7671 and certified, even though there is no notification scheme for domestic electrical work. In a listed building, check before altering original fitted features, as listed building consent may be needed.

Listed buildings and conservation areas in older parts of Belfast and the county towns may need consent for new vents, and apartment owners usually need management consent.

Worth knowing before the fit

  • Before templating day at your Belfast home, make sure the sink, tap and hob are on site so the stone can be cut to them.
  • If your Belfast kitchen has a gas hob, a Gas Safe registered engineer needs to disconnect it before the old worktops come off.
  • Keep a trivet beside the hob from the first day, whichever surface you choose; heat marks are hard to repair on most materials.
  • Stone worktops are templated only once the base units are fixed and level, so allow one to two weeks between fitting and finishing.

Questions about kitchen worktop fitting in Belfast

How much does kitchen worktop fitting cost in Belfast?

Kitchen worktop fitting in Belfast typically costs £440 to £1,100 including VAT for laminate worktops, supplied and fitted, based on prices in Northern Ireland. Larger or more involved jobs cost more, and your price is fixed in writing after a free survey visit.

Which parts of Belfast do you work in?

All of them. Our County Antrim coverage takes in the whole of Belfast, including the BT1, BT2, BT3, BT4, BT5 and BT6 postcode districts, as well as surrounding towns such as Castlereagh. If you are unsure, send us your postcode.

How long does it take to fit new worktops?

Usually a day for laminate or solid wood in a typical kitchen, cut and jointed on site. Stone takes two visits: the fabricator templates once the base units are fixed and level, then cuts the worktops, the sink and hob openings and any drainer grooves, and fits them about one to two weeks later. In the meantime the sink is usually out of use, so plan meals around that gap.

How are laminate worktops joined at corners?

With either a mason's mitre or a joint strip. A mason's mitre is routed with a jig so the front edge profile turns the corner, then glued, sealed and pulled tight with connector bolts underneath. A joint strip is a metal or colour-matched profile fixed and sealed between the two lengths. Either way, every cut edge, including the sink and hob cut-outs, is sealed so water cannot swell the core.

How do I look after a solid wood worktop?

Oil it regularly and keep it away from standing water. Wood is oiled on every face before fitting and given further coats once in place, then re-oiled more often in the first months. Wipe up round the sink and tap, and do not leave wet cloths or a dripping kettle on it. It is fixed with slotted brackets so it can expand and shrink with the seasons without cracking.
