Why splashbacks and tiling for a Marlborough home?

If the kitchen in your Marlborough home is sound but the tiles are dated, cracked or stained, a new splashback is one of the simplest ways to refresh it without replacing units.

If the units in your Marlborough kitchen are already fitted and only the walls are unfinished, we can take on the tiling or splashback as a job on its own. Homes right across Marlborough are covered, as are nearby places such as Swindon, Devizes and the villages in between.

What is in a typical job?

The exact scope is agreed after the survey, but a typical job in Marlborough covers:

  • Tiled splashbacks between the worktop and wall units, set out from a centre line
  • Stone upstands and splashbacks templated and fitted alongside a stone worktop
  • Old tiles removed and walls prepared, patched or boarded where needed
  • Socket and switch plates refitted by an electrician once the tiling is finished
  • Free survey visit to check the walls, agree the layout and give an itemised quote
  • Grout and sealant chosen for easy cleaning, with flexible sealant at the worktop joint

What kind of kitchens do we fit in Marlborough?

The housing mix across Wiltshire includes thatched and stone cottages, Victorian railway terraces, post-war estate houses and new-build estates, so no two kitchen fits are quite alike. Railway terraces in Swindon often have a narrow back kitchen, while stone and thatched cottages in the villages tend to have small kitchens with low ceilings.

Wiltshire's water is hard, much of it from chalk, so limescale on taps and boiling water taps is common and a filter can help. Village lanes and farm tracks can be narrow for delivery lorries, and Salisbury's historic centre has limited parking, so delivery is planned in advance.

Building regulations, electrics and gas in Marlborough

Tiling or fitting a splashback in England needs no planning permission or building regulations approval. If sockets or switches are moved to suit the new wall finish, that is electrical work to BS 7671; adding to an existing kitchen circuit is not notifiable under Part P, but a new circuit is. Behind a gas hob, follow the hob maker's clearance instructions, and in a listed building, removing historic tiles or panelling may need listed building consent.

Listed thatched cottages, Salisbury's historic centre and other conservation areas may need consent for a new external vent or changes to historic features.

Getting the most from your splashbacks and tiling

  • Ask to see where the tiling will start before the first row goes on in your Marlborough kitchen, so narrow cut tiles end up in corners rather than on show.
  • If your Wiltshire kitchen has a gas hob, check the hob instructions for splashback clearances before choosing glass or tiles for the wall behind it.
  • Clear the worktop and empty the nearest wall cupboards before the tiler arrives at your Marlborough home, as cutting dust and adhesive travel further than you expect.
  • Heavy tiles, such as large porcelain or natural stone, may need a stronger backing board and a suitable adhesive, so have the wall checked first.

Questions about splashbacks and tiling in Marlborough

How much do splashbacks and tiling cost in Marlborough?

For a tiled splashback, budget around £150 to £410 including VAT in Marlborough. That reflects typical costs in the South West; we confirm the actual figure in writing once we have measured up.

Which parts of Marlborough do you work in?

All of them. Our Wiltshire coverage takes in the whole of Marlborough, including the SN8 postcode district, as well as surrounding towns such as Swindon. If you are unsure, send us your postcode.

When are splashbacks fitted during a kitchen installation?

Splashbacks go on near the end, once the worktops are fixed and the electrician has agreed where the sockets and switches will sit. Tiles need a finished worktop to start from, glass is measured off the fitted worktop, and stone upstands are templated at the same visit as the worktop. Faceplates go back on after tiling, so the sockets sit neatly against the new finish.

Can you tile over existing kitchen tiles?

Sometimes, but it is rarely the better choice in a kitchen. Tiling over old tiles adds thickness, so sockets, switches and the edge against the wall units may no longer line up, and the new tiles rely on the old ones staying firmly bonded. If the existing tiles are sound and flat it can work for a small area; otherwise we remove them and prepare the wall.

Can heavy tiles or stone go on any kitchen wall?

Not always. Heavy tiles such as large-format porcelain or natural stone need a backing that can carry their weight and an adhesive suited to both the tile and the wall. Old plaster, painted plaster or plasterboard may need preparing, priming or replacing with a tile backer board first. We check the wall at the survey and follow the tile and adhesive makers' guidance.
