Kitchens in homes across Worcestershire

The housing mix across Worcestershire includes timber-framed cottages, Victorian villas and terraces, new town houses and 1930s semis, so no two kitchen fits are quite alike. In Redditch, new-town houses often have a compact galley, while Victorian villas in Malvern and terraces in Worcester tend to have separate kitchens behind the dining room.

Much of Worcestershire has moderately hard to hard water, so limescale on taps and boiling water taps is common, and a filter can help. Hillside streets, village lanes and town-centre terraces with limited parking can all slow deliveries, so the route for worktops is checked at the survey.

Removing a partition to open a small new-town kitchen into the dining area is a common change in Redditch. Timber-framed cottages in the villages often have low beams, uneven floors and walls that are rarely square, which shape where tall units, worktops and extraction can go.

Rules for kitchen installation in Worcestershire

Fitting a new kitchen does not need planning permission in England. Listed building consent may be needed if the building is listed, and a new vent through the outside wall of a flat may need planning permission and the freeholder's consent. Electrical work must meet BS 7671, and new circuits or a new consumer unit are notifiable under Part P, so they are certified through a competent person scheme or building control. New extraction should be designed to Approved Document F rates (about 30 litres per second for a hood ducted outside), a refit should not leave ventilation worse than before, and only Gas Safe registered engineers may connect a gas hob.

Listed timber-framed buildings and conservation areas, including parts of Worcester and Malvern, may need consent for new vents or alterations to historic features.

Before you start

  • If the house was built before 2000, consider an asbestos survey before strip-out, especially with textured ceilings or old floor tiles.
  • Leave every box sealed until the fit; parts get lost or damaged once packaging is opened and stacked around the house.
  • Plan for one to two weeks without a working kitchen; a microwave, kettle and a temporary sink elsewhere make it easier.
  • Book the survey before you order a kitchen, so the plan is checked against real wall lengths, window heights and service positions.
  • Clear the room and the route to it before fitting day, and arrange somewhere in your Worcestershire home for a kettle and microwave.
  • If you live in a flat in Worcestershire, check building rules on working hours, lift protection and parking for the fitting van.

Questions about kitchen installation in Worcestershire

How much does kitchen installation cost in Worcestershire?

For a small kitchen of 5 to 10 units, fit only, budget around £1,500 to £2,500 including VAT in Worcestershire. That reflects typical costs in the West Midlands; we confirm the actual figure in writing once we have measured up.

Do you cover the whole of Worcestershire?

Yes. We carry out kitchen installation across Worcestershire, including Worcester, Redditch, Kidderminster and Great Malvern. Every job starts with a free survey visit and an itemised written quote.

Will you fit a kitchen I have bought myself?

Yes. We fit kitchens bought from any retailer, trade counter or online supplier, flat-pack or rigid. On the survey we check the plan, and before fitting we check the delivery against it. Missing or damaged parts are for the supplier to replace, and we tell you straight away so the fit can be re-planned.

How long does it take to install a kitchen?

Most kitchens take three to twelve days on site to fit, depending on the number of units and whether services are moving. Allow one to three weeks overall once electrics, plumbing, tiling and flooring are included, plus one to two weeks between templating and fitting if you choose stone worktops.

Can I use my kitchen during the installation?

Not for most of it. Once the old kitchen comes out there is no sink or cooker until the new one is connected, usually a week or two for an average kitchen. We plan the job so the water and power are off for as little time as possible, and we tell you which days will be the most disruptive.
