Why do people in Cambridge choose kitchen installation?

Many people in Cambridgeshire replace a kitchen when they move in, before unpacking, so the noisy work is done while the house is still empty.

When a Cambridge kitchen needs new electrics, plumbing and tiling as well as units, one contract keeps those trades in the right order. Homes right across Cambridge are covered, as are nearby places such as Newmarket, Saffron Walden and the villages in between.

What is included in the work?

After the survey visit we write the scope down. For kitchen installation in Cambridge it usually covers:

  • Removal and disposal of the old kitchen, with gas and electrics made safe
  • First-fix electrics and plumbing for the new layout
  • Gas hobs connected only by Gas Safe registered engineers
  • Panels, plinths, cornice, splashback and a final check before handover
  • Free survey visit, measurements and an itemised written quote
  • Base, wall and tall units fixed, levelled and secured to the wall

What should you budget for kitchen installation in Cambridge?

As a starting point for Cambridge, these ranges include VAT at 20% and allow for typical labour costs in the East of England. Prices in the East of England usually run above the national guide, mainly because labour and parking cost more.

Fitting kitchens in older and newer Cambridge homes

The housing mix across Cambridgeshire includes Victorian terraces, 1930s semis, post-war estate houses and fenland bungalows and farmhouses, so no two kitchen fits are quite alike. Terraced houses in Cambridge and Peterborough often have a narrow galley at the back, while Fen bungalows tend to have a simple square kitchen beside the living room.

Water across Cambridgeshire is very hard, so limescale on taps and boiling water taps is common and a filter or softener is worth thinking about. Fen roads and farm tracks can be narrow for delivery lorries, and city-centre terraces often have permit parking and no rear access for long worktops.

Building regulations, electrics and gas in Cambridge

Fitting a new kitchen does not need planning permission in England. Listed building consent may be needed if the building is listed, and a new vent through the outside wall of a flat may need planning permission and the freeholder's consent. Electrical work must meet BS 7671, and new circuits or a new consumer unit are notifiable under Part P, so they are certified through a competent person scheme or building control. New extraction should be designed to Approved Document F rates (about 30 litres per second for a hood ducted outside), a refit should not leave ventilation worse than before, and only Gas Safe registered engineers may connect a gas hob.

Listed houses in historic centres such as Cambridge and Ely may need consent for internal changes or a new vent, although a straightforward kitchen fit needs no planning permission.

Worth knowing before the fit

  • If you live in a flat in Cambridge, check building rules on working hours, lift protection and parking for the fitting van.
  • Order stone worktops early in the plan, as templating can only happen once the base units are fixed.
  • Before you order a kitchen for your Cambridge home, ask for a survey so the plan is checked against real measurements, not estimates.
  • Plan for one to two weeks without a working kitchen; a microwave, kettle and a temporary sink elsewhere make it easier.

Questions about kitchen installation in Cambridge

How much does kitchen installation cost in Cambridge?

For a small kitchen of 5 to 10 units, fit only, budget around £1,600 to £2,700 including VAT in Cambridge. That reflects typical costs in the East of England; we confirm the actual figure in writing once we have measured up.

Do you cover all of Cambridge?

Yes. We work across Cambridge, including the CB5, CB21, CB22, CB23 and CB24 postcode districts, and nearby towns such as Newmarket and Saffron Walden. Book a free survey visit and we will arrange a time that suits you.

Do I need building regulations approval for a new kitchen?

Usually only for parts of the job. Fitting units does not need approval, but new electrical circuits are notifiable in England and Wales, removing a load-bearing wall needs approval everywhere, and in Scotland structural work needs a building warrant. Gas work must always be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Can I use my kitchen during the installation?

Not for most of it. Once the old kitchen comes out there is no sink or cooker until the new one is connected, usually a week or two for an average kitchen. We plan the job so the water and power are off for as little time as possible, and we tell you which days will be the most disruptive.

Will you fit a kitchen I have bought myself?

Yes. We fit kitchens bought from any retailer, trade counter or online supplier, flat-pack or rigid. On the survey we check the plan, and before fitting we check the delivery against it. Missing or damaged parts are for the supplier to replace, and we tell you straight away so the fit can be re-planned.
