Is hob and oven installation right for your York kitchen?

Keen cooks across North Yorkshire often choose a range cooker, which needs a level floor, the right clearances to the units and a stability bracket on gas models.

If your York kitchen has an old ceramic hob with a cracked top, an induction replacement may fit the same cut-out, though the circuit still needs checking. If your home is in York or close by in Selby or Pocklington, the same survey, quote and fitting process applies.

What does the job involve?

After the survey visit we write the scope down. For hob and oven installation in York it usually covers:

  • Induction and ceramic hobs wired to a suitable cooker circuit and tested
  • Built-in single and double ovens fixed into housings with their ventilation gaps
  • Appliance models checked against worktop cut-outs, oven housings and existing supplies
  • Gas supply moved to a new hob position, with pipework tested and made good
  • Old hob or oven disconnected safely and taken away for recycling
  • Gas hobs and cookers connected and tightness tested by a Gas Safe registered engineer

Fitting kitchens in older and newer York homes

Typical homes in this part of North Yorkshire include stone-built cottages, Victorian terraces, Georgian townhouses and post-war semis. Dales and moorland stone cottages often have a small kitchen in a rear extension, while terraces in York and Middlesbrough tend to have a narrow back galley.

Dales and moorland roads can be narrow and steep, and older streets in York can have restricted parking, so delivery vehicles and timing need planning. Water hardness varies across North Yorkshire, from soft in some upland areas to moderately hard elsewhere, so check with your supplier before choosing a filter.

Do you need approval for hob and oven installation in York?

In England, only a Gas Safe registered engineer may fit, connect or move a gas hob, cooker or gas pipework, and the installation is tightness tested afterwards. An induction hob often needs a dedicated cooker circuit; a new circuit is notifiable under Part P, so it is certified through a competent person scheme or building control. Connecting to an existing suitable circuit is not notifiable, but it must still meet BS 7671.

Homes in the Yorkshire Dales or North York Moors national parks, York's many listed buildings and conservation areas may need consent for new vents or internal changes.

Before you book hob and oven installation in York

  • Before buying an induction hob for your York home, check the rating of the cooker circuit at the consumer unit, or ask for it to be checked at the survey.
  • Ask the Gas Safe engineer for a record of the work and keep it with your home documents, especially if you let a property in North Yorkshire.
  • If you are moving the hob in your York kitchen, choose the cooker hood at the same time so the extraction and ducting can follow it.
  • Follow the hood and hob manufacturers' instructions on the minimum distance between them; gas hobs usually need more clearance than induction.

Questions about hob and oven installation in York

How much does hob and oven installation cost in York?

Guide prices in York are about £110 to £280 including VAT for connecting a gas hob to an existing supply. The final price depends on the size of the kitchen and what is moving, and is set out in an itemised written quote.

Do you cover all of York?

Yes. We work across York, including the YO1, YO10, YO24 and YO31 postcode districts, and nearby towns such as Selby and Pocklington. Book a free survey visit and we will arrange a time that suits you.

Does an induction hob need a new circuit?

Often, yes. Many induction hobs draw more current than an ordinary socket circuit can supply, so they are wired to a dedicated cooker circuit from the consumer unit. If you already have a cooker circuit of the right rating, the hob can usually connect to it. A new circuit is notifiable in England and Wales, and everywhere it must be tested and certified to BS 7671.

Who is allowed to connect a gas hob?

By law, anyone who carries out gas work for payment must be on the Gas Safe Register, in Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and anyone working on gas must be competent to do it. We only use Gas Safe registered engineers, and we strongly advise against fitting a gas hob yourself. The engineer connects the hob, tests the installation for tightness, checks the burners and the room's ventilation, and leaves the appliance safe to use. You can ask to see the engineer's Gas Safe ID card before work starts.

Do built-in ovens need ventilation?

Yes. Built-in ovens release heat, and their installation instructions set the gaps and openings the housing must leave, often at the back or beneath the oven. Blocking them can overheat the surrounding units and the oven's own controls. An oven under the worktop and one in a tall housing have different requirements, so we check the instructions for your model before fitting.
