When does hob and oven installation make sense in Berkshire?

Landlords in Berkshire replacing a worn cooker between tenancies need a safe gas connection or a suitable circuit, with the work properly recorded for their property files.

If your Berkshire kitchen has an old ceramic hob with a cracked top, an induction replacement may fit the same cut-out, though the circuit still needs checking.

What does hob and oven installation in Berkshire include?

Here is what usually goes into hob and oven installation, adjusted to your Berkshire kitchen after we have measured it:

  • Appliance models checked against worktop cut-outs, oven housings and existing supplies
  • Laminate and wood worktop cut-outs made to the hob template; stone cut-outs by the fabricator
  • Gas hobs and cookers connected and tightness tested by a Gas Safe registered engineer
  • Induction and ceramic hobs wired to a suitable cooker circuit and tested
  • Built-in single and double ovens fixed into housings with their ventilation gaps
  • Range cookers levelled, with a stability bracket fitted to gas and dual-fuel models
  • Gas supply moved to a new hob position, with pipework tested and made good
  • Old hob or oven disconnected safely and taken away for recycling

Kitchens in homes across Berkshire

The housing mix across Berkshire includes Victorian and Edwardian terraces, 1930s semis, post-war estate houses and new-build town houses, so no two kitchen fits are quite alike. Edwardian terraces often have a long galley running back from the dining room, while newer three-storey town houses usually have a compact kitchen on the ground floor.

Expect hard water in most of Berkshire, much of it drawn from chalk, so limescale on taps is common and a boiling water tap benefits from a filter. Busy town-centre streets and permit parking zones can make unloading slow, so a parking permit or bay suspension may need arranging before delivery day.

In an Edwardian terrace, a common project is knocking the kitchen through to the dining room and adding a run of tall units. Newer homes more often need a like-for-like replacement, sometimes with an island, integrated appliances and better lighting where the room allows.

Rules for hob and oven installation in Berkshire

In England, only a Gas Safe registered engineer may fit, connect or move a gas hob, cooker or gas pipework, and the installation is tightness tested afterwards. An induction hob often needs a dedicated cooker circuit; a new circuit is notifiable under Part P, so it is certified through a competent person scheme or building control. Connecting to an existing suitable circuit is not notifiable, but it must still meet BS 7671.

A new extractor vent on a street-facing wall can need permission in a conservation area, and listed homes may need consent for internal changes affecting historic features.

Before you start

  • If the new hob sits away from the existing gas supply, allow for a new pipe run by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
  • Follow the hood and hob manufacturers' instructions on the minimum distance between them; gas hobs usually need more clearance than induction.
  • Switching from gas to induction leaves a gas pipe that must be capped safely, so plan that with the Gas Safe engineer at the same visit.
  • Check the induction hob's power rating against your existing cooker circuit, as induction hobs often need a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit.
  • If you are replacing an old cooker with a separate hob and oven in your Berkshire kitchen, ask for the gas supply position and condition to be checked first.
  • Confirm whether your new oven sits under the worktop or in a tall housing, because the ventilation and fixing requirements differ between the two.

Questions about hob and oven installation in Berkshire

How much does hob and oven installation cost in Berkshire?

For connecting a gas hob to an existing supply, budget around £140 to £340 including VAT in Berkshire. That reflects typical costs in the South East; we confirm the actual figure in writing once we have measured up.

Do you cover the whole of Berkshire?

Yes. We carry out hob and oven installation across Berkshire, including Reading, Slough, Bracknell and Maidenhead. Every job starts with a free survey visit and an itemised written quote.

Who is allowed to connect a gas hob?

By law, anyone who carries out gas work for payment must be on the Gas Safe Register, in Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and anyone working on gas must be competent to do it. We only use Gas Safe registered engineers, and we strongly advise against fitting a gas hob yourself. The engineer connects the hob, tests the installation for tightness, checks the burners and the room's ventilation, and leaves the appliance safe to use. You can ask to see the engineer's Gas Safe ID card before work starts.

Do built-in ovens need ventilation?

Yes. Built-in ovens release heat, and their installation instructions set the gaps and openings the housing must leave, often at the back or beneath the oven. Blocking them can overheat the surrounding units and the oven's own controls. An oven under the worktop and one in a tall housing have different requirements, so we check the instructions for your model before fitting.

Why does a range cooker need a stability bracket?

Because a range cooker can tip forward if weight is put on an open oven door, which could damage the gas connection or injure someone. Gas and dual-fuel models are secured with a stability bracket or chain to the wall or floor behind, as the manufacturer specifies, and the cooker is levelled on a firm floor so its doors close properly and pans sit flat.
