Common questions

Which kitchen layout suits my room?

It depends mainly on the shape of the room, where the doors and windows sit and how many people cook. Narrow rooms suit a galley, rooms with a corner suit an L-shape, and wider rooms can take a U-shape. An island needs space for walkways of around a metre on each side, and a peninsula gives similar worktop space where an island will not fit.

How much does it cost to install a kitchen island?

A mid-range island supplied and fitted without services is typically £2,000 to £5,000 including VAT, and a large island with cabinets on both faces, a stone worktop and appliances £6,000 to £12,000. Power on a suspended floor adds about £250 to £600, a sink supply and waste £300 to £800, and chasing into a concrete floor £400 to £1,500. Prices are confirmed after a survey visit.

How much does an open-plan knock-through cost?

Removing a non-load-bearing wall and making good typically costs £800 to £2,000 including VAT. A load-bearing wall with a steel beam, including the structural engineer's design and making good, is usually £3,000 to £8,500. A full knock-through with a new kitchen-diner and new flooring throughout is around £25,000 to £55,000. Prices are confirmed after a survey visit.

Does a condenser or heat pump dryer need an outside vent?

No. Condenser and heat pump dryers do not need an outside vent, so they can go where a vented dryer cannot. They collect water in a container that has to be emptied, or they can be connected to the waste so they drain automatically, which is easy when the dryer sits beside the washing machine. They still give off some warmth, so the space needs air around it. A vented dryer needs a duct to an outside wall.
