Is replacement kitchen doors right for your Plymouth kitchen?

If your Devon kitchen is older, its cabinets may be in sizes that are no longer standard, so made-to-measure doors let you keep units that are still sound.

If your Devon kitchen has worktops you still like but dated doors, new fronts in a different style or colour let you keep the surfaces and change the rest. Homes right across Plymouth are covered, as are nearby places such as Plymstock, Saltash and the villages in between.

What is included in the work?

Here is what usually goes into replacement kitchen doors, adjusted to your Plymouth kitchen after we have measured it:

  • Matching end panels, plinths, cornice and pelmet cut and fitted
  • New fronts fixed to integrated appliances with their door-fixing kits
  • Handles or knobs drilled from a template so they sit at a consistent height
  • New soft-close hinges fitted and every door adjusted so the gaps run even
  • Doors and drawer fronts made to measure or matched to the existing sizes
  • Free survey visit to check the carcasses and measure every door and drawer front

Kitchens in homes around Plymouth

You will find cob and thatched cottages, Victorian terraces, post-war houses and flats and seaside bungalows throughout Devon. Victorian terraces in Exeter and Torbay often have a narrow back kitchen, while post-war houses and seaside bungalows usually have a square room that suits an L-shape.

Much of Devon has soft mains water, which is kind to taps and appliances, though some eastern parts are harder, so check with your supplier. Single-track lanes, steep town streets and cottages with no parking can make deliveries slow, so long worktops and tall units need a planned route into the house.

Regulations for kitchen work in Plymouth

Replacing kitchen doors needs no planning permission or Building Regulations approval in England, because nothing structural, electrical or plumbed changes. The exception is a listed building, where original fitted cupboards or joinery may need listed building consent before they are altered. If you add plinth or cornice lighting at the same time, the wiring must meet BS 7671, and a new circuit for it would be notifiable under Part P.

Homes within Dartmoor or Exmoor national parks, listed thatched cottages and conservation areas may need consent before a new extractor vent goes through an outside wall.

Before you book replacement kitchen doors in Plymouth

  • Open the sink cupboard in your Plymouth kitchen and press the base; soft or swollen board means that unit needs replacing before new doors.
  • If the hob or sink in your Devon kitchen needs to move, plan a fuller refit rather than new doors on a layout that does not work.
  • Choose handles after the doors, holding samples against the new colour in your Plymouth kitchen's daylight before anything is drilled.
  • If the worktops are also worn, consider replacing them in the same visit rather than fitting new doors beside tired surfaces.

Questions about replacement kitchen doors in Plymouth

How much do replacement kitchen doors cost in Plymouth?

Replacement kitchen doors in Plymouth typically cost £1,000 to £3,100 including VAT for 15 to 20 doors and drawer fronts, supplied and fitted, based on prices in the South West. Larger or more involved jobs cost more, and your price is fixed in writing after a free survey visit.

Which parts of Plymouth do you work in?

All of them. Our Devon coverage takes in the whole of Plymouth, including the PL2 and PL4 postcode districts, as well as surrounding towns such as Plymstock. If you are unsure, send us your postcode.

What if some of my kitchen units are water damaged?

Damaged units are replaced before the new doors go on, because swollen chipboard does not recover. The sink base is the usual problem, from slow leaks at the trap or tap, followed by units beside the dishwasher. We check every carcass at the survey, look for the cause of any leak, and price replacement units as a separate line so you can see the cost clearly.

When does a new kitchen make more sense than new doors?

When the problem is more than the look. If several carcasses are swollen or broken, the layout does not work for you, or you want to move the sink, hob or appliances, new doors only cover the issue. New doors suit kitchens whose cabinets are square, dry and well fixed and whose layout still works. We will tell you at the survey which route we think makes sense.

Can I change to a completely different door style?

Usually, yes. Slab, shaker and painted doors can all go on standard carcasses if the sizes and hinge positions suit. An in-frame look is more involved, because the doors sit inside a frame built onto the front of the units, so it costs more. A true handleless kitchen uses rails built into the carcasses, so with a door change that look is imitated with edge-profiled doors instead.
