When do replacement kitchen doors make sense in Liverpool?

Homeowners in Liverpool with solid, well-fitted units but tired doors often choose new fronts rather than living through the upheaval of a full kitchen replacement.

If you have bought a Liverpool home where the kitchen layout works but the colour does not, new doors and handles can change the look in a day or two. Homes right across Liverpool are covered, as are nearby places such as Kirkdale, Birkenhead and the villages in between.

What does the job involve?

Here is what usually goes into replacement kitchen doors, adjusted to your Liverpool kitchen after we have measured it:

  • Hinge holes drilled to line up with the positions on your carcasses
  • Handles or knobs drilled from a template so they sit at a consistent height
  • Drawer fronts fixed to existing drawer boxes, or new boxes where worn
  • Matching end panels, plinths, cornice and pelmet cut and fitted
  • Doors and drawer fronts made to measure or matched to the existing sizes
  • New fronts fixed to integrated appliances with their door-fixing kits

Kitchens in homes around Liverpool

The housing mix across Merseyside includes Victorian terraces, Victorian and Edwardian villas, 1930s semis and converted warehouse flats, so no two kitchen fits are quite alike. Two-up two-down terraces often have a small back kitchen off the living room, while 1930s semis tend to have a separate kitchen with space to open into a dining room.

Terraced streets with back entries, city-centre flats with booked lifts and permit parking zones can all affect how and when a kitchen is delivered. Merseyside's mains water is soft, so limescale is rarely a big issue and taps, sinks and boiling water taps stay cleaner for longer.

Do you need approval for replacement kitchen doors in Liverpool?

Replacing kitchen doors needs no planning permission or Building Regulations approval in England, because nothing structural, electrical or plumbed changes. The exception is a listed building, where original fitted cupboards or joinery may need listed building consent before they are altered. If you add plinth or cornice lighting at the same time, the wiring must meet BS 7671, and a new circuit for it would be notifiable under Part P.

Conservation areas and listed buildings are common in older parts of Liverpool and the Wirral, so a new vent on a visible wall may need consent.

Worth knowing before the fit

  • Allow for delivery time on made-to-measure doors; your kitchen stays usable while you wait, as nothing comes off until they arrive.
  • If you let out a Liverpool property, new doors can often be fitted between tenancies in a day or two once they have been delivered.
  • Ask whether the cornice and pelmet will be replaced too, as old ones left on a Liverpool kitchen with new doors often show a colour mismatch.
  • If the worktops are also worn, consider replacing them in the same visit rather than fitting new doors beside tired surfaces.

Questions about replacement kitchen doors in Liverpool

How much do replacement kitchen doors cost in Liverpool?

Replacement kitchen doors in Liverpool typically cost £950 to £2,800 including VAT for 15 to 20 doors and drawer fronts, supplied and fitted, based on prices in the North West. Larger or more involved jobs cost more, and your price is fixed in writing after a free survey visit.

Which parts of Liverpool do you work in?

All of them. Our Merseyside coverage takes in the whole of Liverpool, including the L1, L2, L3, L4, L5 and L6 postcode districts, as well as surrounding towns such as Kirkdale. If you are unsure, send us your postcode.

Are new hinges and handles fitted with the doors?

Yes, normally. Old hinges are often worn or set for the old doors, so new soft-close hinges are fitted and adjusted so the doors close quietly and the gaps run even. Handles are drilled from a template so every one sits at the same height and distance from the edge. If you would like to reuse your existing handles, the new doors are drilled to suit them.

When does a new kitchen make more sense than new doors?

When the problem is more than the look. If several carcasses are swollen or broken, the layout does not work for you, or you want to move the sink, hob or appliances, new doors only cover the issue. New doors suit kitchens whose cabinets are square, dry and well fixed and whose layout still works. We will tell you at the survey which route we think makes sense.

Can I change to a completely different door style?

Usually, yes. Slab, shaker and painted doors can all go on standard carcasses if the sizes and hinge positions suit. An in-frame look is more involved, because the doors sit inside a frame built onto the front of the units, so it costs more. A true handleless kitchen uses rails built into the carcasses, so with a door change that look is imitated with edge-profiled doors instead.
