When does kitchen worktop fitting make sense in Stroud?

Homeowners in Stroud with sound units but worn, chipped or swollen laminate often replace just the worktops, keeping the rest of the kitchen as it is.

Many people in Gloucestershire choose quartz or granite when they upgrade, and need the base units fixed and level before the fabricator can come to template. Our Gloucestershire coverage reaches every part of Stroud (GL5) and out towards Gloucester.

What is in a typical job?

Here is what usually goes into kitchen worktop fitting, adjusted to your Stroud kitchen after we have measured it:

  • Sink, tap and hob reconnected, with gas hobs connected by Gas Safe registered engineers
  • Quartz, granite or sintered stone templated once the base units are fixed and level
  • Matching upstands fitted and the joint to the wall sealed
  • Solid wood oiled before and after fitting and fixed to allow seasonal movement
  • Laminate jointed with a mason's mitre or joint strips, and every cut edge sealed
  • Old worktops removed and taken away, with the sink and hob disconnected safely

What kind of kitchens do we fit in Stroud?

In and around Stroud, homes range across cotswold stone cottages, Regency townhouses, Victorian terraces and post-war estate houses. Cotswold stone cottages often have a small kitchen in a rear extension, while Regency townhouses in Cheltenham may have a long kitchen at garden level or in a former basement.

Stone villages with narrow lanes and limited parking can make deliveries slow, and townhouse flats over several floors may mean carrying units up stairs. Hard water is the norm across most of Gloucestershire, so expect limescale on taps and appliances and think about a filter for a boiling water tap.

Building regulations, electrics and gas in Stroud

New worktops need no planning permission or Building Regulations approval in England. Disconnecting and reconnecting a gas hob must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and an electric hob or oven goes back on its existing circuit. Moving or adding sockets above the worktop on an existing kitchen circuit is not notifiable, but it must meet BS 7671. In a listed building, check before removing any original fitted joinery.

Listed stone cottages, Cheltenham's Regency terraces and homes in conservation areas may need consent before new vents are cut or historic features are removed.

Planning ahead

  • Before templating day at your Stroud home, make sure the sink, tap and hob are on site so the stone can be cut to them.
  • Keep a trivet beside the hob from the first day, whichever surface you choose; heat marks are hard to repair on most materials.
  • For a Stroud kitchen with stone worktops, ask whether the upstands will be cut from the same slab so the colour and pattern match.
  • Solid wood needs regular re-oiling and should not be left with standing water around the sink, tap or kettle.

How much does kitchen worktop fitting cost in Stroud?

Guide prices in Stroud are about £520 to £1,200 including VAT for laminate worktops, supplied and fitted. The final price depends on the size of the kitchen and what is moving, and is set out in an itemised written quote.

Do you cover all of Stroud?

How long does it take to fit new worktops?

Usually a day for laminate or solid wood in a typical kitchen, cut and jointed on site. Stone takes two visits: the fabricator templates once the base units are fixed and level, then cuts the worktops, the sink and hob openings and any drainer grooves, and fits them about one to two weeks later. In the meantime the sink is usually out of use, so plan meals around that gap.

Can I put hot pans on a quartz worktop?

It is safer not to. Quartz contains resin that can discolour or crack under sudden heat, so pans straight from the hob or oven should go on a trivet or pan stand. Granite copes better with heat but can still be marked or cracked by intense heat in one spot, and laminate and wood scorch easily. A trivet kept next to the hob protects any worktop.

How are laminate worktops joined at corners?

With either a mason's mitre or a joint strip. A mason's mitre is routed with a jig so the front edge profile turns the corner, then glued, sealed and pulled tight with connector bolts underneath. A joint strip is a metal or colour-matched profile fixed and sealed between the two lengths. Either way, every cut edge, including the sink and hob cut-outs, is sealed so water cannot swell the core.
