Thinking about kitchen worktop fitting in Sale?

When a Sale kitchen is about to be sold or let, new worktops and upstands can make the room look cared for without replacing any of the units.

Many people in Greater Manchester choose quartz or granite when they upgrade, and need the base units fixed and level before the fabricator can come to template. We work throughout Sale (M33) and across the wider Greater Manchester area.

What is included in the work?

Here is what usually goes into kitchen worktop fitting, adjusted to your Sale kitchen after we have measured it:

  • Laminate jointed with a mason's mitre or joint strips, and every cut edge sealed
  • Sink, tap and hob reconnected, with gas hobs connected by Gas Safe registered engineers
  • Undermount sink and hob cut-outs cut and finished by the stone fabricator
  • Matching upstands fitted and the joint to the wall sealed
  • Old worktops removed and taken away, with the sink and hob disconnected safely
  • Solid wood oiled before and after fitting and fixed to allow seasonal movement

House types around Sale and what they mean for a kitchen

Typical homes in this part of Greater Manchester include Victorian terraces, 1930s semis, converted mill and warehouse flats and post-war estate houses. Two-up two-down terraces often have a small back kitchen or a galley in the rear outrigger, while 1930s semis usually have a separate kitchen beside the dining room.

Terraced streets with back alleys, city-centre flats with booked lifts and permit parking can all affect delivery timing and how long worktops are carried in. Mains water across Greater Manchester is mostly soft, so limescale is less of a problem and taps and boiling water taps tend to stay cleaner.

Do you need approval for kitchen worktop fitting in Sale?

New worktops need no planning permission or Building Regulations approval in England. Disconnecting and reconnecting a gas hob must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and an electric hob or oven goes back on its existing circuit. Moving or adding sockets above the worktop on an existing kitchen circuit is not notifiable, but it must meet BS 7671. In a listed building, check before removing any original fitted joinery.

Listed mill conversions and homes in conservation areas may need consent for new external vents, and apartment owners usually need the freeholder's or managing agent's consent.

Tips before you start

  • If your Greater Manchester home has uneven walls, ask how the worktop will be scribed so the back edge meets the wall without wide gaps.
  • Keep a trivet beside the hob from the first day, whichever surface you choose; heat marks are hard to repair on most materials.
  • For a Sale kitchen with stone worktops, ask whether the upstands will be cut from the same slab so the colour and pattern match.
  • Solid wood needs regular re-oiling and should not be left with standing water around the sink, tap or kettle.

Questions about kitchen worktop fitting in Sale

How much does kitchen worktop fitting cost in Sale?

Kitchen worktop fitting in Sale typically costs £480 to £1,100 including VAT for laminate worktops, supplied and fitted, based on prices in the North West. Larger or more involved jobs cost more, and your price is fixed in writing after a free survey visit.

Can you measure up in Sale before quoting?

Yes. Every quote starts with a free, no-obligation survey visit to your home in Sale. We measure the room, check the walls, floor and service positions, then send an itemised written quote.

How are laminate worktops joined at corners?

With either a mason's mitre or a joint strip. A mason's mitre is routed with a jig so the front edge profile turns the corner, then glued, sealed and pulled tight with connector bolts underneath. A joint strip is a metal or colour-matched profile fixed and sealed between the two lengths. Either way, every cut edge, including the sink and hob cut-outs, is sealed so water cannot swell the core.

How do I look after a solid wood worktop?

Oil it regularly and keep it away from standing water. Wood is oiled on every face before fitting and given further coats once in place, then re-oiled more often in the first months. Wipe up round the sink and tap, and do not leave wet cloths or a dripping kettle on it. It is fixed with slotted brackets so it can expand and shrink with the seasons without cracking.

Can I put hot pans on a quartz worktop?

It is safer not to. Quartz contains resin that can discolour or crack under sudden heat, so pans straight from the hob or oven should go on a trivet or pan stand. Granite copes better with heat but can still be marked or cracked by intense heat in one spot, and laminate and wood scorch easily. A trivet kept next to the hob protects any worktop.
