When does kitchen worktop fitting make sense in Manchester?

Many people in Greater Manchester choose quartz or granite when they upgrade, and need the base units fixed and level before the fabricator can come to template.

Some homeowners across Greater Manchester have already ordered stone worktops from a supplier and need someone to fix and level the base units so templating can go ahead. If your home is in Manchester or close by in Salford or Failsworth, the same survey, quote and fitting process applies.

What we cover for kitchen worktop fitting in Manchester

  • Free survey visit to measure the runs and check the base units are level
  • Sink, tap and hob reconnected, with gas hobs connected by Gas Safe registered engineers
  • Old worktops removed and taken away, with the sink and hob disconnected safely
  • Undermount sink and hob cut-outs cut and finished by the stone fabricator

Kitchens in homes around Manchester

The housing mix across Greater Manchester includes Victorian terraces, 1930s semis, converted mill and warehouse flats and post-war estate houses, so no two kitchen fits are quite alike. Two-up two-down terraces often have a small back kitchen or a galley in the rear outrigger, while 1930s semis usually have a separate kitchen beside the dining room.

Mains water across Greater Manchester is mostly soft, so limescale is less of a problem and taps and boiling water taps tend to stay cleaner. Terraced streets with back alleys, city-centre flats with booked lifts and permit parking can all affect delivery timing and how long worktops are carried in.

Building regulations, electrics and gas in Manchester

New worktops need no planning permission or Building Regulations approval in England. Disconnecting and reconnecting a gas hob must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and an electric hob or oven goes back on its existing circuit. Moving or adding sockets above the worktop on an existing kitchen circuit is not notifiable, but it must meet BS 7671. In a listed building, check before removing any original fitted joinery.

Listed mill conversions and homes in conservation areas may need consent for new external vents, and apartment owners usually need the freeholder's or managing agent's consent.

Getting the most from your kitchen worktop fitting

  • Check that full-length worktops can get into your Manchester home; long lengths need a clear, straight route through the front door and hall.
  • If your Manchester kitchen has a gas hob, a Gas Safe registered engineer needs to disconnect it before the old worktops come off.
  • For a Manchester kitchen with stone worktops, ask whether the upstands will be cut from the same slab so the colour and pattern match.
  • Use trivets for hot pans on every type of worktop; sudden heat can scorch laminate and wood and mark or crack some stone.

Questions about kitchen worktop fitting in Manchester

How much does kitchen worktop fitting cost in Manchester?

Kitchen worktop fitting in Manchester typically costs £480 to £1,100 including VAT for laminate worktops, supplied and fitted, based on prices in the North West. Larger or more involved jobs cost more, and your price is fixed in writing after a free survey visit.

Which parts of Manchester do you work in?

All of them. Our Greater Manchester coverage takes in the whole of Manchester, including the M1, M2, M3, M4, M9 and M11 postcode districts, as well as surrounding towns such as Salford. If you are unsure, send us your postcode.

How do I look after a solid wood worktop?

Oil it regularly and keep it away from standing water. Wood is oiled on every face before fitting and given further coats once in place, then re-oiled more often in the first months. Wipe up round the sink and tap, and do not leave wet cloths or a dripping kettle on it. It is fixed with slotted brackets so it can expand and shrink with the seasons without cracking.

Will you fit stone worktops I have ordered myself?

Yes, alongside your stone supplier. Stone must be templated and fabricated by the supplier once the base units are fixed and level, so our part is getting the units ready, checking they are sound and reconnecting the sink, tap and hob after the stone is in. Laminate and wood worktops you have bought can be cut, jointed and fitted on site in the usual way.

How are laminate worktops joined at corners?

With either a mason's mitre or a joint strip. A mason's mitre is routed with a jig so the front edge profile turns the corner, then glued, sealed and pulled tight with connector bolts underneath. A joint strip is a metal or colour-matched profile fixed and sealed between the two lengths. Either way, every cut edge, including the sink and hob cut-outs, is sealed so water cannot swell the core.
