Thinking about kitchen worktop fitting in Cardiff?

When a Cardiff kitchen is about to be sold or let, new worktops and upstands can make the room look cared for without replacing any of the units.

If your South Glamorgan kitchen still has a dated tiled or laminate surface, new worktops often go in with a new sink, tap and splashback at the same time. We work throughout Cardiff (CF10, CF11, CF14, CF15, CF23 and CF24) and across the wider South Glamorgan area.

What is included in the work?

Your written quote lists everything included. For kitchen worktop fitting, that normally means:

  • Sink, tap and hob reconnected, with gas hobs connected by Gas Safe registered engineers
  • Free survey visit to measure the runs and check the base units are level
  • Undermount sink and hob cut-outs cut and finished by the stone fabricator
  • Matching upstands fitted and the joint to the wall sealed
  • Old worktops removed and taken away, with the sink and hob disconnected safely
  • Quartz, granite or sintered stone templated once the base units are fixed and level

What should you budget for kitchen worktop fitting in Cardiff?

The figures below are guide prices for Cardiff, including VAT and adjusted for typical costs across Wales. The fixed price comes after we have measured up. Labour rates in Wales are generally lower than in London and the South East, so these ranges are a little below the national guide.

Fitting kitchens in older and newer Cardiff homes

Across South Glamorgan you will often find Victorian terraces, Edwardian villas, post-war estate houses and waterfront apartments, and each shapes the kitchen differently. Cardiff's Victorian terraces often have a long galley in the back addition, while Edwardian villas in Penarth may have a separate kitchen and breakfast room.

Busy on-street parking in terraced areas and apartment blocks with booked lifts can affect delivery times and how long worktops are carried in. Much of South Glamorgan has soft to moderately soft water, though some parts are harder, so check with your supplier before choosing a filter.

What rules apply to kitchen worktop fitting in Cardiff?

In Wales, replacing worktops needs no planning permission or Building Regulations approval in itself. The electrics are where Wales differs: moving or adding a socket above the new worktop extends a circuit within a kitchen, which is notifiable under Part P in Wales, so it is certified through a competent person scheme or building control. Gas hobs are disconnected and reconnected only by Gas Safe registered engineers.

Listed buildings and conservation areas, including parts of Cardiff and Penarth, may need consent for new vents, and apartment owners usually need the freeholder's consent.

Planning ahead

  • Clear the worktops and the cupboards beneath them before fitting day, as the old tops and the sink need space to come out.
  • If your Cardiff kitchen has a gas hob, a Gas Safe registered engineer needs to disconnect it before the old worktops come off.
  • Before templating day at your Cardiff home, make sure the sink, tap and hob are on site so the stone can be cut to them.
  • Stone worktops are templated only once the base units are fixed and level, so allow one to two weeks between fitting and finishing.

Questions about kitchen worktop fitting in Cardiff

How much does kitchen worktop fitting cost in Cardiff?

Kitchen worktop fitting in Cardiff typically costs £460 to £1,100 including VAT for laminate worktops, supplied and fitted, based on prices in Wales. Larger or more involved jobs cost more, and your price is fixed in writing after a free survey visit.

Can you measure up in Cardiff before quoting?

Yes. Every quote starts with a free, no-obligation survey visit to your home in Cardiff. We measure the room, check the walls, floor and service positions, then send an itemised written quote.

How are laminate worktops joined at corners?

With either a mason's mitre or a joint strip. A mason's mitre is routed with a jig so the front edge profile turns the corner, then glued, sealed and pulled tight with connector bolts underneath. A joint strip is a metal or colour-matched profile fixed and sealed between the two lengths. Either way, every cut edge, including the sink and hob cut-outs, is sealed so water cannot swell the core.

Can I put hot pans on a quartz worktop?

It is safer not to. Quartz contains resin that can discolour or crack under sudden heat, so pans straight from the hob or oven should go on a trivet or pan stand. Granite copes better with heat but can still be marked or cracked by intense heat in one spot, and laminate and wood scorch easily. A trivet kept next to the hob protects any worktop.

How do I look after a solid wood worktop?

Oil it regularly and keep it away from standing water. Wood is oiled on every face before fitting and given further coats once in place, then re-oiled more often in the first months. Wipe up round the sink and tap, and do not leave wet cloths or a dripping kettle on it. It is fixed with slotted brackets so it can expand and shrink with the seasons without cracking.
