Is kitchen worktop fitting right for your Bradford kitchen?

If you have bought a kitchen online for your Bradford home, you may need a fitter to cut and joint the laminate or wood worktops properly on site.

Homeowners in Bradford with sound units but worn, chipped or swollen laminate often replace just the worktops, keeping the rest of the kitchen as it is. If your home is in Bradford or close by in Shipley or Pudsey, the same survey, quote and fitting process applies.

What does the job involve?

Every kitchen is different, so we confirm the scope in writing. Most jobs of this kind include:

  • Sink, tap and hob reconnected, with gas hobs connected by Gas Safe registered engineers
  • Matching upstands fitted and the joint to the wall sealed
  • Undermount sink and hob cut-outs cut and finished by the stone fabricator
  • Free survey visit to measure the runs and check the base units are level
  • Quartz, granite or sintered stone templated once the base units are fixed and level
  • Solid wood oiled before and after fitting and fixed to allow seasonal movement

What kind of kitchens do we fit in Bradford?

In and around Bradford, homes range across stone-built terraces, back-to-back houses, 1930s semis and converted mill flats. Back-to-backs often have a small kitchen at the front or in a corner of the living room, while 1930s semis usually have a separate kitchen at the rear.

Steep hill streets, terraces with steps up to the door and mill flats with booked lifts can all affect how long worktops and tall units are delivered. Most of West Yorkshire has soft water, drawn largely from Pennine reservoirs, so limescale is less of a concern for taps and appliances.

What rules apply to kitchen worktop fitting in Bradford?

New worktops need no planning permission or Building Regulations approval in England. Disconnecting and reconnecting a gas hob must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and an electric hob or oven goes back on its existing circuit. Moving or adding sockets above the worktop on an existing kitchen circuit is not notifiable, but it must meet BS 7671. In a listed building, check before removing any original fitted joinery.

Listed mill buildings and stone terraces in conservation areas, including the Saltaire World Heritage Site, may need consent for new vents or changes to historic features.

Getting the most from your kitchen worktop fitting

  • Clear the worktops and the cupboards beneath them before fitting day, as the old tops and the sink need space to come out.
  • If your Bradford kitchen has a gas hob, a Gas Safe registered engineer needs to disconnect it before the old worktops come off.
  • Keep a trivet beside the hob from the first day, whichever surface you choose; heat marks are hard to repair on most materials.
  • Stone worktops are templated only once the base units are fixed and level, so allow one to two weeks between fitting and finishing.

Questions about kitchen worktop fitting in Bradford

How much does kitchen worktop fitting cost in Bradford?

For laminate worktops, supplied and fitted, budget around £480 to £1,100 including VAT in Bradford. That reflects typical costs in Yorkshire and the Humber; we confirm the actual figure in writing once we have measured up.

Which parts of Bradford do you work in?

All of them. Our West Yorkshire coverage takes in the whole of Bradford, including the BD1, BD2, BD3, BD5, BD7 and BD8 postcode districts, as well as surrounding towns such as Shipley. If you are unsure, send us your postcode.

Will you fit stone worktops I have ordered myself?

Yes, alongside your stone supplier. Stone must be templated and fabricated by the supplier once the base units are fixed and level, so our part is getting the units ready, checking they are sound and reconnecting the sink, tap and hob after the stone is in. Laminate and wood worktops you have bought can be cut, jointed and fitted on site in the usual way.

How long does it take to fit new worktops?

Usually a day for laminate or solid wood in a typical kitchen, cut and jointed on site. Stone takes two visits: the fabricator templates once the base units are fixed and level, then cuts the worktops, the sink and hob openings and any drainer grooves, and fits them about one to two weeks later. In the meantime the sink is usually out of use, so plan meals around that gap.

Can I put hot pans on a quartz worktop?

It is safer not to. Quartz contains resin that can discolour or crack under sudden heat, so pans straight from the hob or oven should go on a trivet or pan stand. Granite copes better with heat but can still be marked or cracked by intense heat in one spot, and laminate and wood scorch easily. A trivet kept next to the hob protects any worktop.
