Is kitchen worktop fitting right for your Birmingham kitchen?

If your West Midlands kitchen still has a dated tiled or laminate surface, new worktops often go in with a new sink, tap and splashback at the same time.

Solid wood that has blackened around the sink and tap is a common reason people in Birmingham ask about replacing their worktops with something new. Our West Midlands coverage reaches every part of Birmingham (B1, B2, B3, B4, B5 and B7) and out towards Aston.

What is included in the work?

After the survey visit we write the scope down. For kitchen worktop fitting in Birmingham it usually covers:

  • Solid wood oiled before and after fitting and fixed to allow seasonal movement
  • Old worktops removed and taken away, with the sink and hob disconnected safely
  • Quartz, granite or sintered stone templated once the base units are fixed and level
  • Undermount sink and hob cut-outs cut and finished by the stone fabricator
  • Matching upstands fitted and the joint to the wall sealed
  • Sink, tap and hob reconnected, with gas hobs connected by Gas Safe registered engineers

Kitchens in homes around Birmingham

The housing mix across the West Midlands includes Victorian terraces, 1930s semis, post-war council-built houses and post-war flats and maisonettes, so no two kitchen fits are quite alike. Victorian terraces often have a long galley behind the back room, while 1930s semis across Birmingham and the Black Country tend to have a small kitchen at the rear.

Busy terraced streets, permit parking near town centres and blocks with shared lifts can each affect delivery times and how worktops reach the kitchen. Birmingham's water is relatively soft, while much of the Black Country and Coventry is harder, so check your supplier's hardness figure before choosing a filter.

What rules apply to kitchen worktop fitting in Birmingham?

New worktops need no planning permission or Building Regulations approval in England. Disconnecting and reconnecting a gas hob must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and an electric hob or oven goes back on its existing circuit. Moving or adding sockets above the worktop on an existing kitchen circuit is not notifiable, but it must meet BS 7671. In a listed building, check before removing any original fitted joinery.

Conservation areas and listed buildings, including parts of Birmingham and Solihull, may need consent for new vents, and flat owners usually need the freeholder's consent first.

Tips before you start

  • If your West Midlands home has uneven walls, ask how the worktop will be scribed so the back edge meets the wall without wide gaps.
  • Check that full-length worktops can get into your Birmingham home; long lengths need a clear, straight route through the front door and hall.
  • Keep a trivet beside the hob from the first day, whichever surface you choose; heat marks are hard to repair on most materials.
  • Stone worktops are templated only once the base units are fixed and level, so allow one to two weeks between fitting and finishing.

Questions about kitchen worktop fitting in Birmingham

How much does kitchen worktop fitting cost in Birmingham?

Guide prices in Birmingham are about £500 to £1,200 including VAT for laminate worktops, supplied and fitted. The final price depends on the size of the kitchen and what is moving, and is set out in an itemised written quote.

Do you work near Birmingham as well?

Yes. As well as Birmingham itself, we cover the rest of the West Midlands and nearby towns such as Aston and Smethwick. The process is the same wherever the kitchen is.

How are laminate worktops joined at corners?

With either a mason's mitre or a joint strip. A mason's mitre is routed with a jig so the front edge profile turns the corner, then glued, sealed and pulled tight with connector bolts underneath. A joint strip is a metal or colour-matched profile fixed and sealed between the two lengths. Either way, every cut edge, including the sink and hob cut-outs, is sealed so water cannot swell the core.

Can I put hot pans on a quartz worktop?

It is safer not to. Quartz contains resin that can discolour or crack under sudden heat, so pans straight from the hob or oven should go on a trivet or pan stand. Granite copes better with heat but can still be marked or cracked by intense heat in one spot, and laminate and wood scorch easily. A trivet kept next to the hob protects any worktop.

How do I look after a solid wood worktop?

Oil it regularly and keep it away from standing water. Wood is oiled on every face before fitting and given further coats once in place, then re-oiled more often in the first months. Wipe up round the sink and tap, and do not leave wet cloths or a dripping kettle on it. It is fixed with slotted brackets so it can expand and shrink with the seasons without cracking.
