When do splashbacks and tiling make sense in Jarrow?

Many people in Tyne and Wear choose a single panel of toughened glass behind the hob because it wipes clean quickly and has no grout lines to hold grease.

If the units in your Jarrow kitchen are already fitted and only the walls are unfinished, we can take on the tiling or splashback as a job on its own. Kitchens in every part of Jarrow are covered, and the survey visit is free wherever you are in Tyne and Wear.

What does the job involve?

Every kitchen is different, so we confirm the scope in writing. Most jobs of this kind include:

  • Full-height or feature tiling behind the hob, sink or open shelving
  • Free survey visit to check the walls, agree the layout and give an itemised quote
  • Socket and switch plates refitted by an electrician once the tiling is finished
  • Stone upstands and splashbacks templated and fitted alongside a stone worktop
  • Grout and sealant chosen for easy cleaning, with flexible sealant at the worktop joint
  • Old tiles removed and walls prepared, patched or boarded where needed

Use these ranges to plan your budget. They include VAT, reflect costs in the North East, and are firmed up once we have seen your Jarrow kitchen. Costs across the North East tend to sit under UK averages, which these ranges reflect.

Local homes and their kitchens

You will find tyneside flats, Victorian terraces, 1930s semis and post-war council-built houses throughout Tyne and Wear. Tyneside flats often have a narrow kitchen in the rear offshoot, while 1930s semis and ex-council houses tend to have a small square kitchen at the back.

Hardness varies across Tyne and Wear, from fairly soft around Newcastle to harder in parts of Sunderland, so check with your supplier before choosing a filter. Back lanes behind terraced streets can help deliveries, but upper Tyneside flats have their own internal stair, so long worktops need careful handling.

Regulations for kitchen work in Jarrow

Tiling or fitting a splashback in England needs no planning permission or building regulations approval. If sockets or switches are moved to suit the new wall finish, that is electrical work to BS 7671; adding to an existing kitchen circuit is not notifiable under Part P, but a new circuit is. Behind a gas hob, follow the hob maker's clearance instructions, and in a listed building, removing historic tiles or panelling may need listed building consent.

In conservation areas and listed buildings, such as parts of central Newcastle and Tynemouth, a new external vent or changes to historic features may need consent.

Tips before you start

  • Ask to see where the tiling will start before the first row goes on in your Jarrow kitchen, so narrow cut tiles end up in corners rather than on show.
  • Keep the tile boxes until the job is finished and note the batch number, so matching replacements can be found if a tile cracks later.
  • Give fresh grout and sealant the full curing time shown on the packaging before scrubbing them or letting water sit on the joint at the back of the worktop.
  • Agree socket, switch and cooker hood positions before tiling starts; moving them afterwards means cutting tiles out and patching in replacements that may not match.

Questions about splashbacks and tiling in Jarrow

How much do splashbacks and tiling cost in Jarrow?

Splashbacks and tiling in Jarrow typically cost £140 to £360 including VAT for a tiled splashback, based on prices in the North East. Larger or more involved jobs cost more, and your price is fixed in writing after a free survey visit.

Which parts of Jarrow do you work in?

All of them. Our Tyne and Wear coverage takes in the whole of Jarrow, including the NE32 postcode district, as well as surrounding towns such as Hebburn. If you are unsure, send us your postcode.

Can heavy tiles or stone go on any kitchen wall?

Not always. Heavy tiles such as large-format porcelain or natural stone need a backing that can carry their weight and an adhesive suited to both the tile and the wall. Old plaster, painted plaster or plasterboard may need preparing, priming or replacing with a tile backer board first. We check the wall at the survey and follow the tile and adhesive makers' guidance.

Can you tile over existing kitchen tiles?

Sometimes, but it is rarely the better choice in a kitchen. Tiling over old tiles adds thickness, so sockets, switches and the edge against the wall units may no longer line up, and the new tiles rely on the old ones staying firmly bonded. If the existing tiles are sound and flat it can work for a small area; otherwise we remove them and prepare the wall.

When are splashbacks fitted during a kitchen installation?

Splashbacks go on near the end, once the worktops are fixed and the electrician has agreed where the sockets and switches will sit. Tiles need a finished worktop to start from, glass is measured off the fitted worktop, and stone upstands are templated at the same visit as the worktop. Faceplates go back on after tiling, so the sockets sit neatly against the new finish.
