When do splashbacks and tiling make sense in Falkirk?

If the units in your Falkirk kitchen are already fitted and only the walls are unfinished, we can take on the tiling or splashback as a job on its own.

Homeowners in Falkirk often add a splashback as the final stage of a new kitchen, once the worktops are in and the bare wall above them needs a washable finish. Kitchens in every part of Falkirk are covered, and the survey visit is free wherever you are in Forth Valley.

What does the job involve?

After the survey visit we write the scope down. For splashbacks and tiling in Falkirk it usually covers:

  • Old tiles removed and walls prepared, patched or boarded where needed
  • Tiled splashbacks between the worktop and wall units, set out from a centre line
  • Stone upstands and splashbacks templated and fitted alongside a stone worktop
  • Toughened glass splashback measured after the worktops are fitted, with socket cut-outs
  • Socket and switch plates refitted by an electrician once the tiling is finished
  • Grout and sealant chosen for easy cleaning, with flexible sealant at the worktop joint

How much do splashbacks and tiling cost in Falkirk?

As a starting point for Falkirk, these ranges include VAT at 20% and allow for typical labour costs in Scotland. Labour rates in Scotland are generally lower than in London and the South East, so these ranges are a little below the national guide.

Kitchens in homes around Falkirk

In and around Falkirk, homes range across sandstone tenement flats, Victorian villas, post-war council-built houses and new-build estates. Tenement flats in Stirling and Falkirk often have a small kitchen off the hall, while post-war houses and new-builds tend to have compact rectangular rooms.

Expect soft mains water across Forth Valley, which means little limescale on taps, sinks and boiling water taps. Stirling's older streets can be steep with limited parking, and rural roads towards the Trossachs are narrow, so delivery vehicle size and timing are planned ahead.

Building regulations, electrics and gas in Falkirk

In Scotland, tiling and splashbacks do not need a building warrant or planning permission. If sockets or switches are moved to suit the new wall finish, the electrical work must meet the building standards and BS 7671, and you should receive an Electrical Installation Certificate or a Minor Works Certificate. In a listed building, removing historic tiles or panelling may need listed building consent, so check with the local authority first.

Parts of the Stirling area lie within Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, and listed buildings in older town centres may need consent for new vents.

Planning ahead

  • Ask to see where the tiling will start before the first row goes on in your Falkirk kitchen, so narrow cut tiles end up in corners rather than on show.
  • If you are renting out a flat in Falkirk, a single glass panel or large plain tiles cut down the grout that needs cleaning at each check-out.
  • Give fresh grout and sealant the full curing time shown on the packaging before scrubbing them or letting water sit on the joint at the back of the worktop.
  • Agree socket, switch and cooker hood positions before tiling starts; moving them afterwards means cutting tiles out and patching in replacements that may not match.

Questions about splashbacks and tiling in Falkirk

How much do splashbacks and tiling cost in Falkirk?

Splashbacks and tiling in Falkirk typically cost £140 to £380 including VAT for a tiled splashback, based on prices in Scotland. Larger or more involved jobs cost more, and your price is fixed in writing after a free survey visit.

Do you work near Falkirk as well?

Yes. As well as Falkirk itself, we cover the rest of Forth Valley and nearby towns such as Grangemouth and Alloa. The process is the same wherever the kitchen is.

Can a glass splashback go behind a gas hob?

Yes, usually, as long as the glass is toughened and the hob maker's instructions allow it. Toughened glass handles heat far better than ordinary glass, but a gas hob must still keep the clearances set out in its installation instructions, so we check those before ordering. The panel is measured after the worktops are fitted and made with cut-outs for sockets, because it cannot be cut once toughened.

Which grout and sealant are easiest to keep clean?

A darker or mid-tone grout in narrow joints is usually the easiest to keep looking clean in a kitchen, and an epoxy or stain-resistant grout helps behind the hob and sink. Where the tiles meet the worktop, a flexible sealant is used rather than grout, because that joint moves slightly. The sealant can be cut out and renewed later without disturbing the tiles.

Can you tile over existing kitchen tiles?

Sometimes, but it is rarely the better choice in a kitchen. Tiling over old tiles adds thickness, so sockets, switches and the edge against the wall units may no longer line up, and the new tiles rely on the old ones staying firmly bonded. If the existing tiles are sound and flat it can work for a small area; otherwise we remove them and prepare the wall.
