Thinking about kitchen lighting in Tyne and Wear?
Homeowners across Tyne and Wear replacing old halogen downlights often want LED fittings that dim properly and need fewer lamp changes, which can mean new drivers and dimmers.
People refreshing a kitchen in Tyne and Wear without replacing the units often start with lighting, because new strips and downlights change how the room feels after dark.

- Plinth, cornice or glass-cabinet LED strips with hidden drivers
- Switching by zone, with dimmers matched to the lamps and drivers

Kitchens in homes across Tyne and Wear
You will find tyneside flats, Victorian terraces, 1930s semis and post-war council-built houses throughout Tyne and Wear. Tyneside flats often have a narrow kitchen in the rear offshoot, while 1930s semis and ex-council houses tend to have a small square kitchen at the back.
Hardness varies across Tyne and Wear, from fairly soft around Newcastle to harder in parts of Sunderland, so check with your supplier before choosing a filter. Back lanes behind terraced streets can help deliveries, but upper Tyneside flats have their own internal stair, so long worktops need careful handling.
In an upper Tyneside flat, the kitchen often sits in a narrow offshoot, so planning a usable layout within that width is the main task. Terraces and semis frequently have a separate kitchen that owners open into the dining room.
Rules for kitchen lighting in Tyne and Wear
In England, adding lights to an existing lighting circuit in a kitchen is not notifiable, but a new lighting circuit is, so it is either self-certified by an electrician registered with a competent person scheme or approved through building control. Either way the work must meet BS 7671 and be certified. Recessed downlights may need to be fire-rated where the ceiling forms a fire separation, for example below another flat.
In conservation areas and listed buildings, such as parts of central Newcastle and Tynemouth, a new external vent or changes to historic features may need consent.
Before you start
- Check that dimmers suit the LED lamps and drivers you choose, because mismatched parts can flicker, buzz or fail to dim smoothly.
- Set pendant heights and centres once the island size is fixed, so the lights sit over the worktop and clear people's heads.
- Warm white looks softer and more yellow, cool white looks crisper and bluer; mixing the two in one room usually looks patchy.
- Split the lighting into zones on separate switches, so the worktop can be lit for cooking and the table for eating.
- Note the driver type for each LED strip and keep it with your kitchen paperwork, so a failed driver can be matched quickly.
- Choose dimmable lamps if you want dimmers in your Tyne and Wear kitchen, and check the packaging says so; many cheaper LEDs are not designed to dim.
Questions about kitchen lighting in Tyne and Wear
How much does kitchen lighting cost in Tyne and Wear?
Kitchen lighting in Tyne and Wear typically costs £40 to £70 each including VAT for a recessed ceiling downlight, based on prices in the North East. Larger or more involved jobs cost more, and your price is fixed in writing after a free survey visit.
Do you cover the whole of Tyne and Wear?
Yes. We carry out kitchen lighting across Tyne and Wear, including Newcastle upon Tyne, Sunderland, South Shields and Gateshead. Every job starts with a free survey visit and an itemised written quote.
How many downlights does a kitchen need?
There is no fixed number; it depends on the room size, ceiling height, beam angle and brightness of each light. Rather than spacing them in an even grid, it works better to set them out so light falls on the worktops and walkways and not on top of the wall units. We mark positions on the plan against the ceiling joists before any holes are cut.
Do kitchen downlights need to be fire-rated?
Sometimes, and it is often the sensible choice. Where the ceiling forms a fire separation, such as between flats, or where its plasterboard is relied on for fire resistance, cutting holes can weaken it, so fire-rated downlights or covers may be needed. The electrician checks the ceiling build-up before choosing fittings, and our downlight prices allow for fire-rated units where they are required.
Why do some LED kitchen lights flicker on a dimmer?
Usually because the dimmer, driver and lamp are not compatible. LED lights draw very little power, and many older dimmers were designed for filament bulbs, so they can cause flicker, buzzing or a light that will not dim smoothly. The fix is to use dimmable lamps or drivers with a dimmer the lamp maker lists as compatible, and to check the minimum load the dimmer needs.
