Kitchen lighting in Rye
Our kitchen lighting service covers Rye and nearby places such as Tenterden and Hastings, with a free survey visit and an itemised written quote as the first step.

Why kitchen lighting for a Rye home?
When a wall comes out in East Sussex to make a kitchen-diner, one ceiling light no longer works, and the space needs separate light for cooking and for eating.
Homeowners across East Sussex replacing old halogen downlights often want LED fittings that dim properly and need fewer lamp changes, which can mean new drivers and dimmers. If your home is in Rye or close by in Tenterden or Hastings, the same survey, quote and fitting process applies.
What is included in the work?
The exact scope is agreed after the survey, but a typical job in Rye covers:
- Drivers placed where they can be reached for replacement later
- Plinth, cornice or glass-cabinet LED strips with hidden drivers
- Under-cabinet strip or puck lights to light the worktop evenly
- Switching by zone, with dimmers matched to the lamps and drivers
- A lighting plan marked against the kitchen layout and ceiling joists
- Recessed downlights, fire-rated where the ceiling needs to stay a fire separation

Fitting kitchens in older and newer Rye homes
You will find Regency townhouses and flats, Victorian terraces, 1930s semis and seaside bungalows throughout East Sussex. Regency and Victorian houses split into flats often have small kitchens in former reception rooms, while 1930s semis usually have a compact kitchen at the back.
Seafront flats without lifts, permit parking and steep streets in the coastal towns can make delivery and waste removal slower, so access needs planning. East Sussex has hard water, so limescale builds up on taps, kettles and boiling water taps, and a filter or softener is worth considering.
Do you need approval for kitchen lighting in Rye?
In England, adding lights to an existing lighting circuit in a kitchen is not notifiable, but a new lighting circuit is, so it is either self-certified by an electrician registered with a competent person scheme or approved through building control. Either way the work must meet BS 7671 and be certified. Recessed downlights may need to be fire-rated where the ceiling forms a fire separation, for example below another flat.
Listed Regency buildings, conservation areas and homes inside the South Downs National Park may need consent for a new external vent, and flat owners usually need freeholder consent.
Getting the most from your kitchen lighting
- Switch on the lights in your Rye kitchen after dark and stand at each worktop; wherever your head casts a shadow, task light is needed.
- Measure your island before choosing pendants for your Rye home; two or three evenly spaced lights often look more balanced than one large fitting.
- If your home in East Sussex has a bathroom above the kitchen, mention any past leaks, as damp ceilings and recessed lights do not mix.
- Set pendant heights and centres once the island size is fixed, so the lights sit over the worktop and clear people's heads.
Questions about kitchen lighting in Rye
How much does kitchen lighting cost in Rye?
Guide prices in Rye are about £50 to £90 each including VAT for a recessed ceiling downlight. The final price depends on the size of the kitchen and what is moving, and is set out in an itemised written quote.
Which parts of Rye do you work in?
All of them. Our East Sussex coverage takes in the whole of Rye, including the TN31 postcode district, as well as surrounding towns such as Tenterden. If you are unsure, send us your postcode.
Why do some LED kitchen lights flicker on a dimmer?
Usually because the dimmer, driver and lamp are not compatible. LED lights draw very little power, and many older dimmers were designed for filament bulbs, so they can cause flicker, buzzing or a light that will not dim smoothly. The fix is to use dimmable lamps or drivers with a dimmer the lamp maker lists as compatible, and to check the minimum load the dimmer needs.
How many downlights does a kitchen need?
There is no fixed number; it depends on the room size, ceiling height, beam angle and brightness of each light. Rather than spacing them in an even grid, it works better to set them out so light falls on the worktops and walkways and not on top of the wall units. We mark positions on the plan against the ceiling joists before any holes are cut.
Do kitchen downlights need to be fire-rated?
Sometimes, and it is often the sensible choice. Where the ceiling forms a fire separation, such as between flats, or where its plasterboard is relied on for fire resistance, cutting holes can weaken it, so fire-rated downlights or covers may be needed. The electrician checks the ceiling build-up before choosing fittings, and our downlight prices allow for fire-rated units where they are required.
