When does kitchen lighting make sense in Lanarkshire?

If you are adding an island to your Lanarkshire kitchen, the pendant points need to be planned against the island position before the ceiling is finished.

When a wall comes out in Lanarkshire to make a kitchen-diner, one ceiling light no longer works, and the space needs separate light for cooking and for eating.

What does kitchen lighting in Lanarkshire include?

Your written quote lists everything included. For kitchen lighting, that normally means:

  • A lighting plan marked against the kitchen layout and ceiling joists
  • Recessed downlights, fire-rated where the ceiling needs to stay a fire separation
  • Under-cabinet strip or puck lights to light the worktop evenly
  • Pendant points centred over an island, peninsula or dining table
  • Plinth, cornice or glass-cabinet LED strips with hidden drivers
  • Switching by zone, with dimmers matched to the lamps and drivers
  • Drivers placed where they can be reached for replacement later
  • Testing and certification to BS 7671, with notification where required

Kitchens in homes across Lanarkshire

Across Lanarkshire you will often find sandstone tenement flats, four-in-a-block flats, new town houses and interwar council-built semis, and each shapes the kitchen differently. New-town houses in East Kilbride and Cumbernauld often have a compact galley, while tenement and four-in-a-block flats tend to have a small kitchen off the hall or at the back.

Lanarkshire's mains water is soft, so limescale is rarely an issue and taps, sinks and boiling water taps tend to stay cleaner. Common stairs in tenements and upper four-in-a-block flats mean units are carried by hand, while new-town estates may have parking courts some distance from the door.

Removing a partition between the kitchen and dining area is a common new-town project, subject to a building warrant if the wall is load-bearing. Ex-council semis often need a full strip-out with new wiring, more sockets and a layout that makes better use of the space by the back door.

Rules for kitchen lighting in Lanarkshire

In Scotland, adding or changing kitchen lighting in a house does not normally need a building warrant, but it must meet building standards 4.5 and 4.6 and be installed and tested to BS 7671, with an Electrical Installation Certificate or Minor Works Certificate. Where the ceiling separates your home from another, as in tenement or other flatted buildings, recessed downlights may need to be fire-rated to keep that separation.

The New Lanark World Heritage Site, other listed buildings and conservation areas may need consent for new vents, and flat owners may need neighbours' agreement.

Before you start

  • Split the lighting into zones on separate switches, so the worktop can be lit for cooking and the table for eating.
  • Check that dimmers suit the LED lamps and drivers you choose, because mismatched parts can flicker, buzz or fail to dim smoothly.
  • Set pendant heights and centres once the island size is fixed, so the lights sit over the worktop and clear people's heads.
  • Warm white looks softer and more yellow, cool white looks crisper and bluer; mixing the two in one room usually looks patchy.
  • Choose dimmable lamps if you want dimmers in your Lanarkshire kitchen, and check the packaging says so; many cheaper LEDs are not designed to dim.
  • Switch on the lights in your Lanarkshire kitchen after dark and stand at each worktop; wherever your head casts a shadow, task light is needed.

Questions about kitchen lighting in Lanarkshire

How much does kitchen lighting cost in Lanarkshire?

Guide prices in Lanarkshire are about £40 to £80 each including VAT for a recessed ceiling downlight. The final price depends on the size of the kitchen and what is moving, and is set out in an itemised written quote.

Do you cover the whole of Lanarkshire?

Yes. We carry out kitchen lighting across Lanarkshire, including East Kilbride, Hamilton, Cumbernauld and Coatbridge. Every job starts with a free survey visit and an itemised written quote.

Do kitchen downlights need to be fire-rated?

Sometimes, and it is often the sensible choice. Where the ceiling forms a fire separation, such as between flats, or where its plasterboard is relied on for fire resistance, cutting holes can weaken it, so fire-rated downlights or covers may be needed. The electrician checks the ceiling build-up before choosing fittings, and our downlight prices allow for fire-rated units where they are required.

What colour of light is right for a kitchen?

There is no single right answer. Warm white looks softer and slightly yellow, like traditional bulbs, and suits kitchens that double as living space. Cool white looks crisper and bluer, which some people prefer over worktops. Neutral white sits in between. Whatever you pick, keep it consistent across downlights and strips, because mixing tones in one room tends to look uneven.

How many downlights does a kitchen need?

There is no fixed number; it depends on the room size, ceiling height, beam angle and brightness of each light. Rather than spacing them in an even grid, it works better to set them out so light falls on the worktops and walkways and not on top of the wall units. We mark positions on the plan against the ceiling joists before any holes are cut.
