Why do people in Cheshire choose kitchen lighting?

People refreshing a kitchen in Cheshire without replacing the units often start with lighting, because new strips and downlights change how the room feels after dark.

When a wall comes out in Cheshire to make a kitchen-diner, one ceiling light no longer works, and the space needs separate light for cooking and for eating.

What does kitchen lighting in Cheshire include?

Your written quote lists everything included. For kitchen lighting, that normally means:

  • A lighting plan marked against the kitchen layout and ceiling joists
  • Recessed downlights, fire-rated where the ceiling needs to stay a fire separation
  • Under-cabinet strip or puck lights to light the worktop evenly
  • Pendant points centred over an island, peninsula or dining table
  • Plinth, cornice or glass-cabinet LED strips with hidden drivers
  • Switching by zone, with dimmers matched to the lamps and drivers
  • Drivers placed where they can be reached for replacement later
  • Testing and certification to BS 7671, with notification where required

Kitchens in homes across Cheshire

The housing mix across Cheshire includes Victorian terraces, 1930s semis, new-build estates and period farmhouses and cottages, so no two kitchen fits are quite alike. Terraces in towns such as Crewe and Warrington often have a back-addition galley, while 1930s semis usually have a small kitchen that can be opened into a dining room.

Hardness varies across Cheshire, from fairly soft in some places to moderately hard in others, so check with your supplier before choosing a filter or boiling water tap. Rural lanes and long farm drives can be awkward for delivery vans, and terraced streets in older town centres may have limited parking close to the door.

A common job in a 1930s semi is removing the wall between kitchen and dining room and adding a peninsula or island with seating. Larger detached houses and converted farmhouses here often suit a supply-and-fit kitchen with a separate utility room, integrated appliances and a range cooker.

Rules for kitchen lighting in Cheshire

In England, adding lights to an existing lighting circuit in a kitchen is not notifiable, but a new lighting circuit is, so it is either self-certified by an electrician registered with a competent person scheme or approved through building control. Either way the work must meet BS 7671 and be certified. Recessed downlights may need to be fire-rated where the ceiling forms a fire separation, for example below another flat.

Listed timber-framed buildings, homes in conservation areas such as central Chester and the Cheshire fringe of the Peak District National Park may need consent for new vents.

Before you start

  • Check that dimmers suit the LED lamps and drivers you choose, because mismatched parts can flicker, buzz or fail to dim smoothly.
  • Warm white looks softer and more yellow, cool white looks crisper and bluer; mixing the two in one room usually looks patchy.
  • Position under-cabinet lights towards the front of the wall units, so light falls on the worktop rather than glaring off a glossy splashback.
  • Set pendant heights and centres once the island size is fixed, so the lights sit over the worktop and clear people's heads.
  • If your home in Cheshire has a bathroom above the kitchen, mention any past leaks, as damp ceilings and recessed lights do not mix.
  • Switch on the lights in your Cheshire kitchen after dark and stand at each worktop; wherever your head casts a shadow, task light is needed.

Questions about kitchen lighting in Cheshire

How much does kitchen lighting cost in Cheshire?

Guide prices in Cheshire are about £40 to £80 each including VAT for a recessed ceiling downlight. The final price depends on the size of the kitchen and what is moving, and is set out in an itemised written quote.

Do you cover the whole of Cheshire?

Yes. We carry out kitchen lighting across Cheshire, including Warrington, Chester, Crewe and Ellesmere Port. Every job starts with a free survey visit and an itemised written quote.

Why do some LED kitchen lights flicker on a dimmer?

Usually because the dimmer, driver and lamp are not compatible. LED lights draw very little power, and many older dimmers were designed for filament bulbs, so they can cause flicker, buzzing or a light that will not dim smoothly. The fix is to use dimmable lamps or drivers with a dimmer the lamp maker lists as compatible, and to check the minimum load the dimmer needs.

Do kitchen downlights need to be fire-rated?

Sometimes, and it is often the sensible choice. Where the ceiling forms a fire separation, such as between flats, or where its plasterboard is relied on for fire resistance, cutting holes can weaken it, so fire-rated downlights or covers may be needed. The electrician checks the ceiling build-up before choosing fittings, and our downlight prices allow for fire-rated units where they are required.

How many downlights does a kitchen need?

There is no fixed number; it depends on the room size, ceiling height, beam angle and brightness of each light. Rather than spacing them in an even grid, it works better to set them out so light falls on the worktops and walkways and not on top of the wall units. We mark positions on the plan against the ceiling joists before any holes are cut.
