Kitchen lighting in Berkshire
Our kitchen lighting work covers the whole of Berkshire, including Reading, Slough and Bracknell.
Who usually needs kitchen lighting in Berkshire?
People refreshing a kitchen in Berkshire without replacing the units often start with lighting, because new strips and downlights change how the room feels after dark.
In flats in Berkshire, downlights going into a ceiling that separates two homes may need fire-rated fittings, which is worth knowing before you choose a style.
What does kitchen lighting in Berkshire include?
Here is what usually goes into kitchen lighting, adjusted to your Berkshire kitchen after we have measured it:
- A lighting plan marked against the kitchen layout and ceiling joists
- Recessed downlights, fire-rated where the ceiling needs to stay a fire separation
- Under-cabinet strip or puck lights to light the worktop evenly
- Pendant points centred over an island, peninsula or dining table
- Plinth, cornice or glass-cabinet LED strips with hidden drivers
- Switching by zone, with dimmers matched to the lamps and drivers
- Drivers placed where they can be reached for replacement later
- Testing and certification to BS 7671, with notification where required

Kitchens in homes across Berkshire
Across Berkshire you will often find Victorian and Edwardian terraces, 1930s semis, post-war estate houses and new-build town houses, and each shapes the kitchen differently. Edwardian terraces often have a long galley running back from the dining room, while newer three-storey town houses usually have a compact kitchen on the ground floor.
Expect hard water in most of Berkshire, much of it drawn from chalk, so limescale on taps is common and a boiling water tap benefits from a filter. Busy town-centre streets and permit parking zones can make unloading slow, so a parking permit or bay suspension may need arranging before delivery day.
In an Edwardian terrace, a common project is knocking the kitchen through to the dining room and adding a run of tall units. Newer homes more often need a like-for-like replacement, sometimes with an island, integrated appliances and better lighting where the room allows.
Rules for kitchen lighting in Berkshire
In England, adding lights to an existing lighting circuit in a kitchen is not notifiable, but a new lighting circuit is, so it is either self-certified by an electrician registered with a competent person scheme or approved through building control. Either way the work must meet BS 7671 and be certified. Recessed downlights may need to be fire-rated where the ceiling forms a fire separation, for example below another flat.
A new extractor vent on a street-facing wall can need permission in a conservation area, and listed homes may need consent for internal changes affecting historic features.
Before you start
- Warm white looks softer and more yellow, cool white looks crisper and bluer; mixing the two in one room usually looks patchy.
- Split the lighting into zones on separate switches, so the worktop can be lit for cooking and the table for eating.
- Ask where each LED driver will go; it needs to be reachable without lifting floorboards or removing units if it ever fails.
- Position under-cabinet lights towards the front of the wall units, so light falls on the worktop rather than glaring off a glossy splashback.
- For a Berkshire kitchen-diner, put the dining pendants on their own switch so the table can be lit while the kitchen side is off.
- Measure your island before choosing pendants for your Berkshire home; two or three evenly spaced lights often look more balanced than one large fitting.
Questions about kitchen lighting in Berkshire
How much does kitchen lighting cost in Berkshire?
For a recessed ceiling downlight, budget around £50 to £90 each including VAT in Berkshire. That reflects typical costs in the South East; we confirm the actual figure in writing once we have measured up.
Do you cover the whole of Berkshire?
Yes. We carry out kitchen lighting across Berkshire, including Reading, Slough, Bracknell and Maidenhead. Every job starts with a free survey visit and an itemised written quote.
Why do some LED kitchen lights flicker on a dimmer?
Usually because the dimmer, driver and lamp are not compatible. LED lights draw very little power, and many older dimmers were designed for filament bulbs, so they can cause flicker, buzzing or a light that will not dim smoothly. The fix is to use dimmable lamps or drivers with a dimmer the lamp maker lists as compatible, and to check the minimum load the dimmer needs.
Do kitchen downlights need to be fire-rated?
Sometimes, and it is often the sensible choice. Where the ceiling forms a fire separation, such as between flats, or where its plasterboard is relied on for fire resistance, cutting holes can weaken it, so fire-rated downlights or covers may be needed. The electrician checks the ceiling build-up before choosing fittings, and our downlight prices allow for fire-rated units where they are required.
Can under-cabinet lights be added to an existing kitchen?
Yes, usually. The cable can often run behind the wall units or through a short chase, with the driver hidden on top of a unit or in a nearby cupboard. It is neater when the wall units are off or the walls are being retiled, but a careful retrofit is common. In Wales this extends a circuit in a kitchen, so it is notifiable.
