Is cooker hood installation right for your Ayr kitchen?

If your Ayr house has thick solid walls, core drilling a neat hole for the duct takes the right equipment and careful positioning of the outside grille.

Cooks across Ayrshire who fry, grill or stir-fry often find a recirculating hood leaves smells in the house, and look at ducting the air outside instead. If your home is in Ayr or close by in Irvine or Kilmarnock, the same survey, quote and fitting process applies.

What is in a typical job?

Here is what usually goes into cooker hood installation, adjusted to your Ayr kitchen after we have measured it:

  • Hood fixed at the height set by the hood and hob manufacturers
  • Spillage test by a Gas Safe registered engineer where an open-flued appliance is present
  • Power supply connected by an electrician and tested to BS 7671
  • Recirculating hoods fitted with carbon filters, and their limits explained
  • Core drilling through the outside wall and an external grille fitted and sealed
  • Island and ceiling hoods fixed into the ceiling structure by two people

What does cooker hood installation cost in Ayr?

Typical cooker hood installation prices for homes in Ayr, including VAT and adjusted for Scotland. Your own figure depends on the size of the kitchen, the layout and what is moving. Prices in Scotland usually come in below the national guide, as labour rates are lower than in the South East.

Fitting kitchens in older and newer Ayr homes

In and around Ayr, homes range across red sandstone villas, sandstone tenement flats, four-in-a-block flats and post-war council-built houses. Four-in-a-block flats and ex-council houses often have a small galley kitchen, while sandstone villas in Ayr tend to have a larger kitchen with a separate dining room.

Ayrshire's mains water is soft, so limescale is rarely a problem and taps, sinks and boiling water taps tend to stay cleaner. Upper four-in-a-block flats usually have their own stair, and coastal towns can have limited parking, so the route for long worktops is checked at the survey.

Do you need approval for cooker hood installation in Ayr?

In Scotland, standard 3.14 of the domestic Technical Handbook expects kitchens to have extract ventilation, and a recirculating hood alone does not remove moisture. Fitting an extractor fan or a ducted hood does not normally need a building warrant. In a flat, a new vent through a shared outside wall may need the other owners' agreement and planning permission, and a listed building may need listed building consent. Where the room has an open-flued gas appliance, a Gas Safe registered engineer should carry out a spillage test after the hood is fitted.

Listed sandstone villas and conservation areas in older town centres may need consent for a new external vent, and flat owners may need neighbours' agreement for shared walls.

Planning ahead

  • Before choosing a hood for your Ayr kitchen, find the nearest outside wall to the hob, because the shorter the duct run, the better the extraction.
  • If your Ayr home is listed, or in a building with strict rules on outside changes, check what is allowed before any hole is cut for a duct.
  • Check whether your Ayr home has an open-flued boiler or gas fire, and mention it at the survey so a spillage test can be planned.
  • Check the minimum height above the hob in both the hood and hob instructions, and use the greater of the two figures.

Questions about cooker hood installation in Ayr

How much does cooker hood installation cost in Ayr?

Guide prices in Ayr are about £110 to £230 including VAT for a like-for-like cooker hood swap. The final price depends on the size of the kitchen and what is moving, and is set out in an itemised written quote.

Which parts of Ayr do you work in?

All of them. Our Ayrshire coverage takes in the whole of Ayr, including the KA7 postcode district, as well as surrounding towns such as Irvine. If you are unsure, send us your postcode.

How high should a cooker hood be above the hob?

At least the minimum distance given by the manufacturers. Both the hood and the hob instructions set a minimum gap between them, and where they differ the greater figure should be used. Gas hobs usually need more clearance than induction. A hood fitted too low is a fire risk, while one fitted much higher than recommended captures less steam.

Why might a cooker hood need a spillage test?

Because a hood pulling air out of a room can draw fumes back down the flue of an open-flued gas appliance, such as some older boilers or gas fires. Where the kitchen, or a room open to it, has one, a Gas Safe registered engineer should carry out a spillage test with the hood running at full speed. Room-sealed boilers are not affected in the same way.

Does a cooker hood need a hole in the wall?

A ducted hood does. The usual route is a core-drilled hole through the nearest outside wall, with rigid ducting from the hood and an external grille sealed into the wall. Where the hob is far from an outside wall, the duct can sometimes run above the wall units or through a ceiling void. A recirculating hood needs no hole, but it removes no moisture.
