What prompts cooker hood installation in Aberdeen?

If condensation runs down the windows of your Aberdeen kitchen whenever you cook, the hood may be recirculating, undersized or ducted through a long, flexible run.

If your Aberdeen kitchen has an older open-flued boiler, fitting a stronger hood needs care, as it can affect the flue and should be followed by a spillage test. Our Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire coverage reaches every part of Aberdeen (AB10, AB11, AB12, AB13, AB15 and AB16) and out towards Stonehaven.

What is in a typical job?

Your written quote lists everything included. For cooker hood installation, that normally means:

  • Island and ceiling hoods fixed into the ceiling structure by two people
  • Core drilling through the outside wall and an external grille fitted and sealed
  • Recirculating hoods fitted with carbon filters, and their limits explained
  • Short, straight runs of rigid ducting wherever the route allows
  • Survey of the hob position, duct route, outside wall and any open-flued appliance
  • Power supply connected by an electrician and tested to BS 7671

Cooker hood installation prices in Aberdeen

The figures below are guide prices for Aberdeen, including VAT and adjusted for typical costs across Scotland. The fixed price comes after we have measured up. Prices in Scotland usually come in below the national guide, as labour rates are lower than in the South East.

Local homes and their kitchens

In and around Aberdeen, homes range across granite tenement flats, granite villas, post-war council-built houses and farm cottages. Granite tenement flats often have a small kitchen off the hall, while villas and bungalows across Aberdeenshire tend to have a separate kitchen beside the dining room.

Tenement flats without lifts mean carrying units up common stairs, and rural farm tracks can be narrow for delivery lorries. Mains water across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire is soft, so limescale is rarely a problem and taps, sinks and boiling water taps stay cleaner.

Building regulations, electrics and gas in Aberdeen

In Scotland, standard 3.14 of the domestic Technical Handbook expects kitchens to have extract ventilation, and a recirculating hood alone does not remove moisture. Fitting an extractor fan or a ducted hood does not normally need a building warrant. In a flat, a new vent through a shared outside wall may need the other owners' agreement and planning permission, and a listed building may need listed building consent. Where the room has an open-flued gas appliance, a Gas Safe registered engineer should carry out a spillage test after the hood is fitted.

Homes in the Cairngorms National Park, listed granite buildings and conservation areas may need consent for new external vents, and tenement owners may need neighbours' agreement.

Practical advice for Aberdeen homeowners

  • Choose a hood at least as wide as your hob, and compare its stated extraction rate with the size of the room before you buy.
  • Ask for rigid ducting rather than flexible hose wherever the route allows, as it moves more air, gathers less grease and is usually quieter.
  • Before choosing a hood for your Aberdeen kitchen, find the nearest outside wall to the hob, because the shorter the duct run, the better the extraction.
  • If the kitchen has an open-flued boiler or gas fire, a Gas Safe registered engineer should carry out a spillage test after the hood is fitted.

Questions about cooker hood installation in Aberdeen

How much does cooker hood installation cost in Aberdeen?

Guide prices in Aberdeen are about £110 to £230 including VAT for a like-for-like cooker hood swap. The final price depends on the size of the kitchen and what is moving, and is set out in an itemised written quote.

Can you measure up in Aberdeen before quoting?

Yes. Every quote starts with a free, no-obligation survey visit to your home in Aberdeen. We measure the room, check the walls, floor and service positions, then send an itemised written quote.

How high should a cooker hood be above the hob?

At least the minimum distance given by the manufacturers. Both the hood and the hob instructions set a minimum gap between them, and where they differ the greater figure should be used. Gas hobs usually need more clearance than induction. A hood fitted too low is a fire risk, while one fitted much higher than recommended captures less steam.

Should I choose a ducted or a recirculating cooker hood?

A ducted hood is usually more effective, because it takes steam, smoke and smells outside. A recirculating hood passes air through grease and carbon filters and returns it to the room, so it deals with grease and smells but not moisture, and another means of extract is usually needed. Recirculating suits kitchens with no practical duct route, and its carbon filters need replacing.

Does a cooker hood need a hole in the wall?

A ducted hood does. The usual route is a core-drilled hole through the nearest outside wall, with rigid ducting from the hood and an external grille sealed into the wall. Where the hob is far from an outside wall, the duct can sometimes run above the wall units or through a ceiling void. A recirculating hood needs no hole, but it removes no moisture.
